That's a loaded question that is really too tough to answer.
How long is your commute? How many time zones? Where are you based?
**My experience I was usually able to hold trips that would be commutable on at least one end. Not always, but most of the time. Now I'm fairly senior in my base and can hold many trips commutable on both ends. (RW cert)

To answer your question; yes and no. If you're senior enough they can be commutable however for the longest you might just want a crashpad. I'm a 5th yr FO and sitting in a hotel right now.

Shuttle in ORD has commutable schedules for the most part. I have had to get 2 hotels in the last 6 months or so. I am senior in base now, but even when I wasn't, I didn't have much trouble getting good trips. Other bases at Shuttle, not so commutable.

If you're on the Chautauqua cert, the trips are not commutable from my experience. They are outstation bases, which means you will be the first flight out at 0500 on the first day and finish as the last flight in at 2300 on your last day. Because you'll have to flip from AM to PM somewhere in your pairing, you'll be sitting in a hotel for 18+ hours at some point. I'm not sure if it's still like this, but it was pretty hard to do and I only had a 2 hour drive.
