Most of your questions can be answered by a visit to PSA's website:
http://www.psaairlines.com/

or by visiting Airline Pilot Central (APC):
http://airlinepilotcentral.com/airli...ional/psa.html

As entertaining as these forums are, they really shouldn't be a primary source of information on a company...

PSA has stopped hiring until the beginning of next year. Their last class was sometime last month and they told that class they where the last until then. But I have heard they are a good company to work for.

One of my friends flies for them and absolutely loves it, he held CLT right out of training.

PSA is a middle of the road regional. Wholly owned by US Airways, thier bankruptcy put a screetching halt to growth when orders for additional ac were placed on hold indefinately. This summer a proposal from management to fly 20 additional CRJ 900 A/C at the current blended rate was rejected soundly. Attrition runs about 8 pilots a month. We have 35 CRJ 200s and 14 CRJ 701s. To get CRJs on property PSA signed a Jets for Jobs LOA, which essentially allows half of all avilable slots to go to Furloghed Mainline pilots. 8 J4Js are in IOE now. J4Js are almost all Captains. PSA pilots are on the Airways CEL, however the status of the CEL itself is in dispute. We are paid a blended rate based on the number of 200s and 701s on property each quarter. (ie 35*200 rate + 14*701 rate / 49 = blend rate) It does not matter which AC you fly, your pay is the same.

Most flying is in and out of CLT. Some PHL, DCA and LGA remain. Domiciles are CLT DAY & TYS. New hires have been place in each directly out of class. If you don't get your choice immediately, you should within a couple months. New hire classes are continuing. They cancel some for reasons unfathomable to line pilots. We are astonishingly short staffed. An upgrade class scheduled for August was postponed till December, allegedly because of a severe FO shortage. Upgrades are running at about 4 years, barring additional J4Js appearing. Should Mainline recall in earnest next year, as is rumoured, upgrades could come down to 2 1/2 years. If the additional ac orders find thier way here, the fleet could grow to 80.

I held a line at 6 months in DAY. At 14 months I'm back on reserve in CLT.
Schedules are below average. One month this summer the best line had only 14 days off. Lots of 2+ hour sits in CLT. Lots of 4 day trips worth less than 20 hours. No trip rig, except for open time(4 hour min at 150%). Very few out & back trips, except for Stand ups. Reserves have 10 days off. It is easy to swap RSV DAYS. Not as easy to trip trade. You can trip trade with open time, but you can not drop trips into open time. You can not trade a trip for a trip with fewer days. There is no forum to advertise trip trades, other than crew room bullitin boards. No access to CrewTrac to see what scheduling is working on. Reserves are advised between 1900-2100 the night before what thier reserve duty period will be the next day. Call out is 1 1/2 hours. You can not bid an early or late schedule. You may request first out, last out, early period, late period, but scheduling is under no obligation to grant any request. And if they don't have to, they're happy not to.

Pay is block or better. 100% cancellation pay. 125% extention pay. 150% Junior man pay. 150% SDO pay (4hour min) 50% deadhead pay, unless DH is all you do that day. MX is good. Crew meals are so-so. Hotels run the gamut from rotten to okay to suprisingly nice. SSO seems determined to eliminate any suprises. Many Capitains have been bumped from multiple domiciles. PSA used to have bases in CLE CVG PIT and CAK, these closed and PHL was PSA's largest base. Whisky came in and PSA closed PHL, transfering most flying to CLT.

Indoc training and systems arr in DAY. The DAY airport hotel is the biggest rat hole you ever will stay in, so I suppose you get desensitized after that month. Sim is in CLT.

The CRJ is a great airplane to fly. The Pilots are great guys, even the J4Js. The flight attendants are... the best they can get. Scheduling is the best they can get... in Dayton... for minimum wage.

PSA has some good upside; CRJs, US Airways CEL, possible explosive growth. Also some signifigant downside; Mesa-ish poor scheduling, US Airways alumni in management, currently stagnent seniority.

I came to PSA because at an Aug '01 Career fair, they were the happiest pilots there; morale was obviously great. Today morale is not nearly as good, and with reason.

If I were to sort which regionals are the best places to be, based on QOL, Upgrade time, and Morale, I'd put CHQ, XJT and SKYW on top, Horizon, Whisky and Eagle on tier two, PSA, Comair and ASA on tier three, TSA, Mesaba, Pinacle, and most Prop carriers on tier four, and Mesa, ScabJets, Great Lakes, and other bottom feeders on tier five.

Latest on PSA...

One more class to start sometime in Nov. There were some failures in sim training, and they need to start another class to fill the void. Last class started 10/2. From what I hear things slowed down due to simulator availabliity in CLT. New hires, upgrades, and recurrents all trying to funnel into to few time slots. Pilots are still needed though.

We are always the last to know... This would be an update to the CP's even though we have told them they needed it!
Stay tuned!
