QX is considering moving from a 35 day to a monthly bid. What are some of the problems you have seen with a monthly bid? Specifically pay and pay guarantee with carry-over trips. We know the 35 day bid problems well, but few of us have monthly bid experience.

If your at the bottom of the seniority list the biggest thing can be days off at the end of one month and the beginning of the next. We have a "2 day off minimum" which can be waived by the pilot if they want to...but it can be waived by the company at the end of the month. I've never actually had this problem, but if you have a 4 day trip, last day of the month off, and then a 4 day trip starting on the 1st of the month, that could suck. I don't know how other airlines handle this problem and from what I've seen we're pretty good at avoiding it...but it does happen.

So far, I like having monthly bids over the 5 week bid at QX. It's nice to know when you will be bidding and when the awards will come out. It's the same every month. One very small issue with the monthly bid is that the guarantee and min days off are per bid, not per month. Some of the bid periods are 31 days instead of 30 depending on the month. Basically in a 31 day bid, the company gets an extra day of work out of you for free.
Not sure how it works for days off in the bid transition for us.
