If the interviewer detects a "chip on your shoulder" you will get the boot.

My phone still has yet to ring from a major in the US.
Admittedly I did get close with TWA but AA bought them before I got the interview.

I was at a job fair in the Spring of 2001.
The UA rep wasn't really interested in talking to males.
He even insinuated that I had too much time for my age, 4000 TT and under 30.

Or some of the stories from buddies that interviewed at USAir.
The app window had closed some 3 months previous but yet there were females filling out the app just prior to the interview and being asked if they had any female friends that needed jobs.

The stories go on and on and UAL was quite possibly the biggest offender.
Admittedly one female that I though was a shoe in with UAL didn't get the job. I guess she was over qualified.

Now before you go thinking that I am anti-female, I am not.
I just want to see qualifications as the benchmark rather than gender or race.

Hopefully in the next wave of hiring some of the silliness will stop with HR.

Just curious, do you possess a 4 yr bachelor's degree?

In 1990, with 5200 total and 2000 in DC-9s (all military time) United told me I was "overqualified" for them. They wanted people with 750 - 1500 hours who they could "train to be United pilots."

7 years later they hired me with almost the exact same civilian time (substitute 727 for DC-9). Where did you end up?

Is there an European-American Left Handed box?

I think you have to be a "certain percentage" of the "race" or "ethnicity" to be able to "check the box."

"o_O"
Not if you're running for US Senate.

That said, as a plain old American Caucasian I'm just one of the many swinging d**ks left in the pile that get sorted through after the above and then the "who you know" crowd as we also know that who you know is another way you make it in America.

Let's say I did some digging on my ancestry and "maybe" found some Cherokee in there way back when. So, now I'm an American Indian and damn proud. How is that going to sit if I list in on my resume when it asks the obligatory race question? The one that says you don't have to participate in and has no bearing on your application mind you.....right.
Does my resume get moved up toward the top?

Sorry, but you're SOL. My wife's grandmother was 1/4 Cherokee indian and lived on the reservation in Cherokee, NC. According to her, tribal law says that you must be at least 1/4 Cherokee blood to be considered a Cherokee indian.

Go ahead and put down on the app that you are native american and expect to be booted out of the interview soon after arrival.
He's not looking to join the tribe. All he need do is check his home states requirement for making the claim, or the state where his company is HQ'd

The Govt requires far less to legally make the claim, than the tribe will require. Some states defer to the tribes, others don't. If he can find a way to check the box, do it. But be prepared to justify it.
