Is that what this was about? Having to lower the minimums as a workaround to find enough other than WM pilots to satisfy a quota number?
EEOC Targets Jobs at United Airlines - Los Angeles Times Sorry, but at that time there were PLENTY of pilots that were not only qualified, but competitive as well. Lowering the mins was a complete joke. In late 2000 UAL upped the mins ATP numbers. Weird, isn't it? xjtguy: Here is the article from the link you provided. It mentions nothing about standards being lowered to accommodate the hiring of minorities and women. EEOC Targets Jobs at United Airlines September 13, 1988|Associated Press Share WASHINGTON — The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission asked a federal court Monday to hold United Airlines in contempt for failing to hire enough blacks and women as pilots. In a motion filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, the commission charged that United has failed to abide by a 1976 consent decree in which the airline agreed to hire qualified minority and women pilots at double the rate at which they applied for the jobs in relation to white males. Based on data provided by the company, the EEOC said United received more than 32,500 applications for entry-level pilot positions between 1985 and 1987. Among the 1,400 pilots hired, 75 were blacks or other minorities and 59 were women--a ratio smaller than the share of blacks and women in the pool of applicants, the commission said. At the same time, I'm providing a link that spells out exactly what the Affirmative Action Program/Legislation was intended to accomplish. Hopefully this will clear up some of the misinformation that has been so widely accepted about affirmative action. AFFIRMATIVE ACTION atp |

This incident was covered in a previous post, where there appears to be some debate as to the gender of the PF:

All you haters need to stop hating, the mainlines have minimums just a tad north of most regionals minimums, because they don't have enough applicants with 1000 TPIC and a 4 yr degree like SWA and FedEx are getting.....

No, all the majors including places like spirit and VA, have thousands of resumes from RJ Captains with plenty of TPIC and a degree. The ONLY reason some airlines have lower mins is so they can, at their discretion and to suit their purposes, hire the occasional non-competitive applicant when they want to. This would include affirmative action and those with VERY, VERY good internal connections (children of senior managers). No average RJ pilot is getting hired without TPIC. |

Shortly before that a young lady, on departure from SFO, nearly surgically removed San Bruno mountain with a 747. Coincidence? If that airplane had been about 20 feet lower, UAL would have ended up bankrupt by all accounts.

Dude read between the lines.... I know Delta could set their min to 10,000TT, 5000 TPIC, and a masters degree, and still have an overload of qualified applicants. So why do they set their "Minimums" just a tad north of companies like Skywest, express jet, eagle ect ect.. I was indirectly saying what Rickair777 just said, and it has everything to do with the original post. It's so they have the options of hiring management kids, minorities, and women, with very low time. The whole debate of preferential hiring could be solved if mainline would set their minimums to at least 4000TT 1000TPIC 4year degree, which would be well below the average applicants qualification.. I never saw a SWA or FedEx pilot who was a minority or female and thought they got lucky because of who they were, they met very strict minimums to even apply.

Also
If they don't set the mins where they do, it makes things tough for fighter guys. I know this is the regional forum and it chips at the narrative, but until the last decade or so, the majority of applicants targeted and hired were from that side of the pool.
