Default HR Discrimination and Such

OK, I'm sure there are some here that will disagree, however I and many others I know are aware that women and minorities go to the top of the resume pile at the majors and big boy freight haulers, as well as the regionals, nationals, etc.

That said, as a plain old American Caucasian I'm just one of the many swinging d**ks left in the pile that get sorted through after the above and then the "who you know" crowd as we also know that who you know is another way you make it in America.

Let's say I did some digging on my ancestry and "maybe" found some Cherokee in there way back when. So, now I'm an American Indian and damn proud. How is that going to sit if I list in on my resume when it asks the obligatory race question? The one that says you don't have to participate in and has no bearing on your application mind you.....right.
Does my resume get moved up toward the top?

It would be very tempting for me but what happens to the one guy who is a large percentage Cherokee and can't get a look because there are a stack of "Cherokees" on top of his. I don't like how affirmative action works but I was raised in a comfortable household with a lot of opportunity. With what I was lucky enough to have I should be able to make my resume good enough to get to where I want to go. I have seen the women and minorities float over to CAL as well and it really doesn't bother me. Getting bent out of shape about every person that hit it right and got hired at the right time will just make you hate this job even more. Some people are lucky or know the right person but that really is just the way it goes.

I was raised in a working class household in the Southeast. Parents split so I joined the Navy to finance college. Flight instructed, flew 135 boxes at night and got 800 turbine PIC there. EMB145 turbine PIC over 1500. 7000 total. Hopefully that gets me in the lower tier of "competitive" right?

Flying a Delta jumpseat on 76 with female FO. Got to talking about what's competitive with the crew to get a look from Delta and she speaks up and says, "Oh, I got hired here with 2000 total. Flight instructed till 900 and went to regional XXX. I didn't upgrade, (translate NO turbine PIC) and hired into the right seat here in 2007. You should be golden."

I guess she was clueless.

Just got me to thinking about how proud I was of being a Cherokee now.

How exactly does one reading a resume tell if a candidate is a minority?

Boiler - it doesn't. That famous "what race are you?" Question that you're not obligated to answer that won't affect your chances of being hired does.

I asked a Citation X captain a few years ago how she got that gig and she replied, "on my back." I asked if she was joking and she said no. I told her i have a better job than the Citation X she could try out for and she just laughed. Is it BS...yes, is there anything i can do about it..no. Life goes on.

I'm surprised no one has been "terribly offended" by this thread yet.
