Why would you leave UPS to take a job flying a citation? Were you fired from UPS or something?

And IIRC, by that time UPS had gone to the 1000 TPIC requirement. Unlike pre 9/11. There was even that very, very brief time (2-3 classes worth) where not only 1000 TPIC but Class II nav experience was required as well.

He was an intern or work/study.

UNLESS you are a tribal member you're lily white buttocks had better be pretty careful trying to pull the native American card. Call the Cherokee tribal council and see if you qualify, they've recently changed their standards and you honkies that are like 1/84th Cherokee no longer make the cut. I think I read that you have to be at least 1/4 or maybe 1/8th proven Cherokee blood to qualify for tribal membership.

Also even at UAL where "they only hire minorities" about 8% of the pilots are of minority status. Which if you are able to do the math in your head, means that 92% of the pilots there were not hired due to minority quota issues.

So most of this I didn't get hired because I'm a poo white boy stuff is total baloney. In my class at UAL we had 21 guys no women and one minority who also happened to be an F-16 guard guy that was extremely qualified. Which if you look at the stats is a pretty typical new hire mix at most airlines.

That said, as a plain old American Caucasian I'm just one of the many swinging d**ks left in the pile that get sorted through after the above and then the "who you know" crowd as we also know that who you know is another way you make it in America.

Let's say I did some digging on my ancestry and "maybe" found some Cherokee in there way back when. So, now I'm an American Indian and damn proud. How is that going to sit if I list in on my resume when it asks the obligatory race question? The one that says you don't have to participate in and has no bearing on your application mind you.....right.
Does my resume get moved up toward the top?
Indian tribes generally have strict standards for getting on their membership roles, sometimes 25%, typically between 1/8 or 1/16. If you can get on their list you should be golden.

But the airlines hire minorities only to show progress towards federal quotas for their governemnent contracts (GSA, DoD, USPS, etc). They probably don't really care about the issue, they just want the numbers on their board. They may not be too stringent about what counts as a minority...these days it's all about how YOU feel...if you feel "minor", and have something way back in the tree to justify that feeling a little, you're probably OK. This is tried and true, and very, very, very few HR managers would EVER risk trying to accuse someone of not being a "fill-in-the-blank" after they self-identify...guess wrong on that, and he's fired AND sued. If even if he prevails, all he accomplished was to lose a quota point.

I wouldn't outright lie about it though, at least not until gay becomes an affirmative action category...then I think many (or most) of us will be "coming out of the closet"

To the OP, just keep in mind, no one owes you a job. You have to apply and keep your fingers crossed just like everyone else.

I slaved in the right seat of an RJ for six years...why hasn't Delta hired me?

Or maybe I should put in my résumé with the majors and get hired to test your theory. Last I check I think 90% of pilots in majors were white males.
Most Asians are not considered minorities in the US. Your ancestral culture has the right chemistry to fit in, thrive, and excel...as much or more so than the European founders of this nation. That's a good thing.

The reason 90% of pilots are white males (I think it's closer to 80%) is because middle-class white male youth culture is into things like airplanes and model rockets. Same reason certain sports are dominated by certain cultural groups (hoops, hockey).

It's not that minorities are excluded, it's that they are not interested.

Or like so many other fields, they're at an educational disadvantage and can't qualify for the "good" jobs.

The solution is not to hire under-qualified people on a quota basis, the solution is to fix the education system.

That would go a long way. But that's FAR from the simple answer. The first sentence of the above is spot on.

Whenever I fly with somebody that's that's other than WM, their back ground seems to comply with your first paragraph. Middle, and sometimes upper class.

They had ALL THE SAME (and sometimes MORE) opportunities and doors open than the white male suburban middle-class airline pilot demographic.

No, the only thing I find offensive is people that are so easily offended.
