FWIW...in my RJ jumpseat travels over the years I often talk to the RJ guys about when/if they plan to move on to SWA, FDX, etc...They all tell me about how they have xx,xxx hrs of PIC turbine time, buddies writing letters, etc... and still can't get an interview. But, when I ask them if they have a 4 yr Bachelor degree, the response is often, "I 'went' to the University of _____." Unfortunately, 'Went to' and 'graduated from' are two different things. Most of my buds over the years that ended up as "lifers" at the regionals were lacking a 4 yr degree. Now from the sound of it, many of you have that piece of paper. If so, I would say that your timing is just bad considering the state of our industry over the last decade. I truly believe that the hiring "flood gates" are about to open again though. If you don't have a 4 yr degree during at least the initial hiring wave I think that all of the turbine PIC time in the world is not going to help. I know it's outrageously expen$ive to do, but, if someone was anywhere near completion of a 4 yr degree it might make sense to complete it via online courses our whatever it takes. Just my .02

As far as your Mexican-American example above - I guess they don't have Mexican-American tribal rollcalls?
HSLD does a good job of explaining the issue in his post a few back (#43).
I'm just playing devil's advocate here but why do only native Americans have a recognized council that certifies membership in a racial group? Is there an African American council, or a Latino American certification/card? Perhaps all the 1/16 Cherokee people should form a group to certify their status as a minority. This isn't something I'd want to be involved in as an HR recruiter.

"Oh you're obviously African American. But you, you need a tribal card!"

"Are you REALLY a woman?"

What a mess...

I think the USC is hearing a case on affirmative action in state schools this term. Decision/scope will be too narrow though.

Why not? It worked for the senator-elect from Massachusetts.

One of my ex girlfriends was full on Mexican (both parents came from the gdl area), but she was completely white and their last name was "Dan". She checked the Latino box and was never asked about it when she was job hunting.
Was she cute?

To the OP, Reality check....I recommend concentrating on what you can do to be competitive in the industry and maintain a positive mental attitude vice worrying about what racial "box" to check on an application. At the end of the day your coming off as an individual lacking confidence and compensating severely (my perception). I'm not opposed to healthy discussion, but it's unfortunate to see folks carrying on in this way. Not sure how this discussion is productive, just my 2-cents.

The clear solution to this problem is forming the White Male Pilot's Association (WMPA) so our grievances can be heard throughout the industry!
