To those who think there's really no discrimination you're just fooling yourselves. Years ago I applied to throw boxes at a reputable cargo company and the base was in a pretty ghetto area... Out of the 40 or 60 applicants that showed up for the cattle call guess who they hired? Yours truly and another white dude. 2! Out of all those non whites. Granted we both werent into crack, hadn't been to jail and had degrees but we both came to the conclusion that they were trying to fill a quota. This is reverse of what were talking about here but whites can be minorities too in certain fields.

If your position info is correct, go get some 121 turbine time. Serious advice.

Whites (and asians and middle-easterners) may be minorities in certain fields but other than certain pro sports and musical genres, they are probably not particularly desirable fields to be in.

There's no doubt some minorities in america are disadvantaged but it's no longer because of discrimination...it's because of lacking educational opportunities and cultural attitudes of some minority sub-groups.

Can you still find discrimination? Sure if you look hard in the deep south and one or two other rural niches, but it's not pervasive in mainstream america. Every group has their haters.

The solution IMO is to raise the kids right...society needs to provide the opportunity in school and the parents (and broader cultural groups) need to encourage and enable kids to take advantage of that...anybody who is reasonably smart and applies themselves can get a full ride college scholarship in this country. This gets folks into the mainstream as productive members of society, as opposed to special treatment and handouts which drains our resources and perpetuates the problem.

Default me part minority

Can I be considered part African?
Part Italian Somalian because my grand dad was a captain under Mussolini in Italian Somolia and after WW II,
my dad a commissioner under the United Nation trusteeship in Somalia from 1949, until 1964?

My birth certificate says I was born in Hawaii though,
but I hear that can be changed these days.

What if you're black Irish?

The argument of minorities stealing all the good jobs in aviation is as stupid as rednecks saying the immigrants are stealing all the jobs in America. If you can: count the amount of minority pilots at your airline and you know his/her name, ID number, signatures, and voice on the radio then you don't have an invasion of the darkies.

It's ok for minorities to toss the bags, push the tug, and clean the lav, but keep them out of the cockpit. Right?

You are correct. It did work for Sen. Warren. But not in the way you are probably already biased to think.

The Republicans, and especially their redneck tabloid mouthpiece, the Boston Herald (a paper which makes USA Today appear intellectual by comparison) seized upon that Native American controversy, and wouldn't let go. The question even dominated many, many minutes at the opening of the first televised debate.

The result?

The voters got sick of hearing about it, and finally looked at the Republicans like, "Is that all you got?"

If that contrived controversy had any bearing on the election whatsoever, it was that it may have cost Sen. Brown more votes for being a non-issue than it did Sen. Warren for being an issue.

You need to contact your tribe and get your tribal membership card. I am 1/8 Wichita, but I don't put that on my apps. There was also a class action lawsuit where tribal members each got $1000. I suggest you look into it, if you are serious.

The Cherokee nation doesn't have blood percentage laws, just ancestry.

I have had my apps in since the day I got my 1000 TPIC in '98.
My phone still has yet to ring from a major in the US.
Admittedly I did get close with TWA but AA bought them before I got the interview.

I was at a job fair in the Spring of 2001.
The UA rep wasn't really interested in talking to males.
He even insinuated that I had too much time for my age, 4000 TT and under 30.

Or some of the stories from buddies that interviewed at USAir.
The app window had closed some 3 months previous but yet there were females filling out the app just prior to the interview and being asked if they had any female friends that needed jobs.

The stories go on and on and UAL was quite possibly the biggest offender.
Admittedly one female that I though was a shoe in with UAL didn't get the job. I guess she was over qualified.

Now before you go thinking that I am anti-female, I am not.
I just want to see qualifications as the benchmark rather than gender or race.

Hopefully in the next wave of hiring some of the silliness will stop with HR.

Exactly what I was thinking. At my company I've heard a lot of the same complaints about hiring practices. However, when you ask one of these individuals "do you have a four year degree" ...SILENCE.

Anyone that thinks flight time is the sole determinant of qualification is going to be disappointed, this is 2013 not 1960. You've been listening to the wrong people in more ways than one!

My experience is that, all the minority and women pilots I know come from middle class families and have the degree. Even still 95% of the pilots I encounter are white males. So where's the discrimination?

Just as I thought. You don't have a clue at what you are talking about.

Your talking about the way it should work but not the way it really works.
