The longevity based payscale is a large part of the problem, not seniority.

Since there is absolutely no fair, objective means of gauging individual pilot performance, seniority is the the only equitable way to award schedules, domiciles, and upgrades. Otherwise, everything goes to the @ss-lickers...how would you like having to spend your days off hanging around the CP's office to curry favor in order to get that upgrade?

Rick we are talking about the same thing. When a guy gets hired he is assigned a number. Not talking about domiciles, upgrades etc. If in the course of 5 or 10 years his company goes to the crapper, what's he gonna do start over at the bottom in seniority at a different airline or stick it out and hope things get better next round of negotiations. Until the longevity based payscale is fixed, joe senior pilot is not going to move most of the time.
