Checking a bag while jumpseating
#1
Has anybody ever checked a bag at the ticket counter when trying to jumpseat? My wife and I are leaving on vacation tomorrow (we purchased her ticket,) and I was wondering if we could avoid the bag fee at the ticket counter. The flight is on Delta, from RDU-DTW, in case anybody has specific experience at either of those airports with the ticketing agents. Thanks in advance.

You should be able to check a bag at no cost, in fact if you have too many carry-ons you might have no choice but to check one.
They'll usually do a gate check for jumpseaters, but I'm sure the counter would do it if you asked.
But be aware that if you get bumped at the last minute, the bag-matching rule will not apply so your checked bag will probably leave without you.

Thanks for the reply. Being bumped from the flight shouldn't be an issue for us since we bought a ticket for my wife. It's good to know they'll check bags for free though. The last couple of times we ended up paying the fee when we checked in online since it was cheaper than paying at the airport.

Haha, yes I realize vacation and Detroit usually don't go together, but the west side of the state is amazing this time of year. Especially when you're sipping an adult beverage out on the boat.
