Coffee Canadian security

Does anyone know if crew members are allowed to bring a cup of coffee thru security in Canada?

I'm looking to get my Tim Hortons fix in YUL and the only one appears to be before security.

Andrew_VT 08-01-2013 08:54 PM

Nope they make you trash it in YUL. Other canadian airports sometimes have you put it in a special cup holder tray and send it through the machine.

WJA Pilot 08-01-2013 09:08 PM

As silly as it may sound, generally Canadian security will let you bring your Timmy double double through if you have it covered by a paper bag.
I can't make this stuff up. It's all about perception. Apparently the crash axe in the flight deck is ok, but you can't have passengers seeing you bring your coffee through security.
Anyways that should do the trick.

tyurchevich 08-01-2013 09:24 PM

Was told by a Canadian security official crews cant bring drinks through because its not fair to the public. seriously. Think this was in YWG.

SkyBird17 08-01-2013 10:38 PM

I was told to dump my coffee in YYZ but I can bring my bottle of water in.... I can't make this **** up!

They told me if I could somehow conceal it going through the xray belt I could have it... this is AFTER I cleared Customs in Toronto and was technically already on soverigh american ground!

What's even more maddening in regards to what you said is when, back here in the US, you Must send the CLEAR bottle of water through the xray to irradiate it, yet the OPAQUE cup of coffee is good to carry through in your hands.

McNugent 08-02-2013 04:29 AM

In the past 2 weeks they've made me trash mine in both YHZ and YUL.

This is because Canada is a socialist country, and everything has to be "fair".

RhinoPherret 08-02-2013 04:53 AM

Great to see that Canadian and U.S. security policies are on equal footing.

Guess both are trying to outdo each other in the stupidity department.

Can’t accuse each country’s security agencies of not collaborating on the issues.

Avroman 08-02-2013 05:25 AM

Yup last week in YOW a Jazz captain was complaining with a security supervisor about the obsurdity of the rules. It seems the rules are different for the domestic flights and the ones that preclear going to the USA.

Just slowly drink it before you go thru. Coffee IS a safety of flight item isn't it?:)

Captain Tony 08-02-2013 06:29 AM

What are they going to do to you if you refuse to pour out the coffee? Call you mean? It's Canada. What you going to do, throw a snowball at you? Put mind control in the beer, eh?

el jefe 08-02-2013 06:39 AM

I was told in YOW that if I put the coffee cup IN my rollaboard then I could take it through. It was early and I thought

Oddly, YOW has never hassled me about coffee. The YYZ guys are dicks, though.

FSUpilot 08-02-2013 12:20 PM

I was told in YUL that we can't even bring water through. Ive never been hassled there before.. just by this one dude. I asked why and he said it was "your countrys rules" i just said that my country allows me to bring it through; so youre wrong. He wasn't having it and got ****ed. He's the only turdball that gave me crap about water though. Powertrip maybe

Most likely ****ed at yet another 'Merican thinking that rules didn't apply to them. The domestic rules in Canuckia are far more lenient because they don't have to cater to foreign policy. This is similar to how, every time some US customs or INS guy ****es off the relative of a powerful Mexican, all of us pilots get crap over it going through customs in Mexico for the next 3 months.

Always remember, their country, their rules!

Captain Tony 08-03-2013 03:37 PM

They can have my coffee. Their beer sucks and their hockey teams couldn't win the Lord Stanley Cup against a high school team.

Ar Pilot 08-03-2013 09:55 PM

A big +1 to Canada being a beer wasteland. I've been known to snag a double double and a Boston crime every now and again, though.

BoredwLife 08-04-2013 07:59 AM

I commute from out of YYZ and I am surprised that nobody has seen the easy answer here. Bring a thermos buy a large, fill it up, toss it in your bag and you should be good to go.

2/3rds of the hockey players in the NHL are Canadian. They just make more money playing in the states.
Canadians sell Molson products to Americans who are used to crappy beer. They can't tell the difference.
Want a real beer? Try Sleemans.

EMBFlyer 08-04-2013 09:18 AM

YQB took my coffee. Pierre told me that the passengers get upset at seeing the pilots bring coffee through and they can't. It was 5 am and I was ****ed. The following week, I back back in YQB and Pierre (same dude) was supervising the bags going into the X-ray. He saw my water bottle on my flight bag and said he he wasn't supposed to be able to see it. I told him to close his eyes then.

Sleeman's is ok and the Habs and Maple Leafs perpetually suck.

Still not real beer. It is a wasteland when it comes to beer up here. UGH What I would give for a nice Dogfishhead on draft. I would even take it bottled.

Dang I do love some dogfish beer. They have awesome food at the restaurants too.

Back to regular programming: Canada beer sucks.

Captain Tony 08-05-2013 09:10 AM

But they have Moosehead! C'mon, Moosehead Eh?!!!

Confused 08-05-2013 11:47 AM

The 2010 Olympic gold medal game would indicate that the Canadians can play some good hockey.

In terms of the coffee gimme dunkin donuts any time!

crustacean 08-05-2013 02:15 PM

Molson is the Canadian version of Budweiser, Labatt is Coors, etc. Molson M, although nowhere near "great" is a decent drink.

For a good Canadian beer, my favorite is a toss up between Pump House Canadian Cream and Pump House Pail Ale.

CaptainCarl 08-05-2013 03:31 PM

I'm going through YYZ in a couple of days. Come hell or high water, they ain't takin' ish from me. In a cup or in my stomach, it's coming with me :D

Confused 08-05-2013 05:25 PM

Why are people so funky about following a rule that is different than what's in 'merica?

Different country different rules. Shocking.

Yet once I pre clear thru US Customs are I not "technically" in the US and the Canadian security is checking pax to US standards (using yyz as an example all flights once thru security are all US destinations). So it should be the same rules in the US, correct? Kinda like watching Canadian TSA allow some pax keep a bottle of shampoo yet has a fit when you carry coffee is out of wack.

Confused 08-05-2013 07:08 PM

I dislike the dumb @ss rule too, trust me.

However, pre clearing customs does not put you on US soil per say. It's not like you're entering an embassy or something. The purpose of customs is to keep out people that aren't allowed, keep out contraband and regulate a number of other things. It does not suddenly change the rules, regs and laws you gotta follow simply because you spoke for 12 seconds to a customs agent.

Sitting at Timmy-Ho's as I type this in YYZ. :D

If you come through Terminal 1. There is one on the gate side of security, by gate F66 (old 166).

Last time I commuted out of Terminal 3 they still had not opened one on gate side. That was about 4 months ago.

Because Canada is a socialist country that imposes "orderly society" by creating lots of asinine petty rules. And that all goes against everything we Muricans stand for.

Ok so as an American I'm supposed to throw a fit each time I go thru security in a foreign country in order to stand up for American values. Got it.

My suggestion to you meanwhile, considering the numerous negative and ignorant comments you have about the country, is to stay out of Canada if you hate it that much.
