From personal experience I know this is true. TSA did this a few months back, but guess what....they saved TONS when 3 months later a handful of 60 furloughees returned and now they are super short staffed. Saved how much money??? 3 months of FO pay times 60 pilots....THAT is a drop in the bucket versus 60 new training cycles.

Having guys sit on reserve is the only cost. Having guys furloughed doesnt save you any money except their pay....You are paying for aircraft either way.... Now when you need those guys back, if they are on reserve, no problem.....Furloughees look for jobs and in this case get them. TSA called us all back, and most had jobs at XJT among other places. TSA absolutly lost lots of money on that furlough.

How much commitment to ground instucting do you have to give? Are there guys who do it only for like 3-6 months or so, or are the looking for someone who is going to commit for long-term?

Thanks for the info!
It IS a great deal. Lets say first year pay basically bumps to 2nd year....therefore the 2nd year pay bump gets you close to SRJ CA pay....Its good.

Commitment is verbal and longer term. It takes months just to get qual'ed on all the courses to teach so they are investing time to get you trained. 3-6 months would not look good and you wouldnt be of much use to them for such a short period. A couple years min really but most people stay longer. The option to return to the line is still around and they will work with you and your situation.

I love the position and teaching keeps me sharp on the airplane. I will be very ready for my upgrade when it comes in 2 years......

Which is my point; just because XJT is hiring like crazy doesn't mean they won't furlough in 5 months. I'm not saying they're gonna do that either, I was just responding to your previous post:

That is what is scary about XJT...not only is it unknown about furloughs, but that 2-3 year uprgrade could soon be 4-5 years...

that's true, but tomorrow something could happen at Usair or at any of these other companies and you'd be looking at the same thing. Its the industry, a job that looks good today could look horrible tomorrow and visa vera. You just have to move forward with the current FACTS at hand. I'd much rather be at a place like XJT and be happy with my company than be somewhere that I know will be there for a long time but get treated like crap.....just my .02

Well with the uncertainty, if I could get out of my CJC contract, I would.

We havent taken delivery of an aircraft since at least sept..... Hiring is mostly for attrition right now, but that alone is VERY good movement. It is also public that CAL HAS increased block hours on the aircraft we will continue to fly for them so that requires more pilots for those aircraft.

In january we only lose 10 planes, but those go straight into charter..... February is 10-15 more and AT LEAST 5 of those will also go charter. The company has stated if it can put more planes to charter, they too will be busy. The planes will fly, the pilots will fly, and hiring is bound to continue.

Say what you want, but any new hire should not be worried about furlough any more than a new hire at CAL, CHQ, SWA, UPS, FDX, SKYW, etc. You should be proud and excited.
