Horizon issues Ipads to all pilots. The company issued Ipad 4s back in July, and all pilots are required to have them for every flight. Most people I talk with find it more of a nuisance than helpful, since they must be charged at least 50% prior to each leg, updated prior to starting each trip, and you are not allowed to leave it 'unattended' (cant leave it in your bag in the crew room while you go find food, you are supposed to take it with you). The company still hasn't gotten the FAA approval to remove the paper manuals yet so those need to be updated and carried as well (was supposed to happen back in September and haven't heard any recent updates).
The company says you can have personal apps on the ipad (just no personal email), but there is a 'big brother' tracking software that sends data to the company on your usage, not sure exactly what or how it works, but most pilots dont put anything on the company ipad other than the required company material and carry their own personal ipad with them as well.

Sorry, I must not have made that part very clear. The ipads will be great, if and when we no longer have to carry any paper. Currently, we still have to carry all of our paper manuals and jepp charts in addition to the company ipad. At some point we will be losing the paper flight ops and standards manuals, but there have been no recent talk as to when that my be. Even then we will still have to carry all of our paper Jeps. We do NOT have Jeps on the ipads. The company has said several times they wont be putting jeps on the Ipads anytime in the foreseeable future.
So for now at least the ipads are more trouble then they are worth.

I picked up one of these for $80 new on ebay: myCharge - Hub 9000
This one has a USB and a lightning port so you can charge your ipad and phone at the same time. It's good for a full 0-100% ipad charge and probably 2 full cycles on an iPhone 5. As for updates, I couldn't imagine those would be a problem. They take about 2 minutes and only come out about once every ten days. Just check it when you get up in the morning, problem solved.

I did a side by side comparison the other day of the Jepp app on an original (non-retina display) Mini and an Air, and the difference in legibility and clarity was substantially in the Air's favor. I still think the Mini is the perfect form factor though, and am looking forward to seeing how charts look on one with a retina display.
