That was kinda of the plan. My sister was a comair furlough back in 08/09 I think and tookthat package to leave and went right to the USAFR and is now with Atlas with a Delta interview in a week. Would be nice. Thanks though I appreciate it, for anyone under the age of 28 it is a great route to go.

Interesting. I was going to say make sure you're reading a current reg book or better yet go online. I was going to cut and paste from the GPO web site but the reg they show is 2012. When you go through the FAA web site to the current regs you get:

(b) An applicant for an airline transport pilot certificate with an airplane category multiengine class rating or an airline transport pilot certificate with an airplane type rating may take the practical test with an expired knowledge test only if the applicant passed the knowledge test after July 31, 2014, and is employed:
(1) As a flightcrew member by a part 119 blah, blah, blah

You'll find Feds in a FSDO many times don't have a clue. There is more information covering this in the Final Rule published in the Federal Register. Bottom line, I'm going to stand by my prior posts. I'd still say any ATP written done before completing an ATP CTP is only good for 24 months. The only way to get the 60 month window or the expired air carrier employee break is to complete the ATP CTP.

Don't trust what a random FSDO guy says.

eCFR ? Code of Federal Regulations

It looks like you are correct. I'll either have to get my ATP before I leave, take the test right before july and hope I finish in 2 years, or do that STUPID classroom time and 10 hour sim time. Hope I have a few thousand dollars just to take a written.

"(b) An applicant for an airline transport pilot certificate with an airplane category multiengine class rating or an airline transport pilot certificate with an airplane type rating may take the practical test with an expired knowledge test only if the applicant passed the knowledge test after July 31, 2014, and is employed:"

If I understand it correctly, you can only use an expired one if you take the test after july 31 2014. Meaning you still have to go through all that classroom training? Which means it would expire 2 years from that date. Am I getting that right?

The break point is 31 July 2014. Any ATP written passed before that date has a 24 month shelf life. If you pass the written after that date you have a 60 month shelf life and there is no shelf life for air carrier employees.

Technically if you pass the written before 01 August 2014 but after completing an ATP CTP you get the 60 month window. But you don't get the air carrier extension unless you pass the test after the end of July.

One other thing to keep in mind. When you read 61.156 you'll notice it says "After July 31, 2014, a person who applies for the knowledge test for an airline transport pilot certificate with an airplane category multiengine class rating..." Currently the airplane ATP written does not differentiate between single and multi engine. It looks like the FAA is going to overhaul the ATP written. It may take the test prep folks a while to get spooled on the new tests.

SkyAsMyRoof,

Depending on how you time your TDYs (C-17 missions overseas) before your return to your civilian employer, SFAR 100-2 might be applicable.
