RAH CEO at RAA Panel Discussion
I just finished watching the RAA Panel Discussion video(s) on the pilot shortage, which include the cogent thoughts of Rev. Bedford and Dan Akin. You can watch the video(s) in their entirety at http://airinsight.com/2014/05/16/the-pilot-shortage/
I noted THIS striking contradiction: Beginning at the 7:15 mark of the third video, Mr. Bedford reveals that the new "1500 hour rule" is causing airlines to hire INFERIOR pilots! His assertion, (backed up by Mr. Akin) is that in the past, they have found that pilot with "several hundred" hours of experience (350 to 500 hours) perform better and are easier to train than pilots with 1200 to 1500 hours of experience,........ because the lower time pilots haven't had time to "develop bad habits".
The striking part of Mr. Bedford's and Mr. Akin's assertion is that in the early to mid 2000's, most regional airlines, (including Mesaba and RAH),........ REQUIRED APPLICANTS TO HAVE 1000, 1200, and 1500 HOURS OF FLIGHT EXPERIENCE!!
So, as CEO of Mesaba and RAH in the early and mid 2000's,....... why did you insist on hiring inferior pilot applicants, Mr. Bedford?
And seriously, B-ry? Would you rather have your family flown in an ERJ/CRJ by a 350 hour Riddle/UND grad or a 1500 hour cargo/135 guy who's spent time away from "the patch", in "real weather", at "real airports", at real flight levels, with real pressures to get the job done?
