He's right it's only a second class required! When the ATP rule initially came out the FAA was requiring a 1st class medical... That changed and now it's only a second class. You are not exercising your ATP as the PIC.

Wouldn't be the first time I was misinformed. Can you direct me to the FAR that specifically states this?
My company's FOM plainly states that an FO must have a valid 1st class medical.

thats not a bad deal, i know it sux now to do the ctp for the atp but 6 hours in a class c sim, 4 hours in ftd and 30 hours ground for 5k is cheap. i did the dispatcher at HPA and were good .btw can someone tell me now that co-pilot in 121 require atp do they also require a first class medical or just 2nd (like before) ive googled that and found conflicting info.

ive read both too but think 2nd is more likely choice

I couldn't quote you the FAR off hand.. All I can tell you is that this is what my airlines opspecs says. I have always got a first class anyway...

"(2) Must hold at least a second class medical certificate when exercising:

(i) Second-in-command privileges of an airline transport pilot certificate in part 121 of this chapter (other than operations specified in paragraph (a)(1)(ii) of this section)"

If you didn't keep track of things, they changed the reg in July 2013 to reflect the ATP requirement. Your company might require it for other reasons but the FAA does not require it for domestic 121 FOs.

Somehow missed that, I'll have to go read it. I still have yet to hear of a single domestic airline that doesn't require a 1st class as a minimum requirement to be a FO candidate.

My guess is they have to ensure that you are able to hold a first class as they are expecting you to upgrade when the time comes...

What a lot do is say you need a first class but then allow the duration to be a second class. So it's a first class every one year, regardless of age.
