This is true. I know a few people from the 10/18/16 class that were awarded Miami right after IOE.

So if I were to bid Miami shortly after IOE I could commute to MIA from any of the Florida airports without much hassle? (besides MCO)

It depends... Getting to MIA is not easy. There's a lot of pilots and flight attendants doing the same commute. Commuting out of JAX to MIA if you decide to join RAH for instance is easy because they do most of the flights and since it's their plane you'd have a good priority, and there's always the jumpseat. Out of MCO would be tough and out of TPA you don't have as many flights to and from MIA. But it all depends on what you want to do and what your priorities are. There is a lot of people that would call you crazy for considering Silver for instance, but I know a guy that went from Silver to Xtra. He spent 2 years in Silver flying out of MCO, living in base and now he flies a 737 and still lives in MCO. He goes positive space wherever the company needs him to go.
So decide what you want, determine what's important for you and go for it. If you're single and have the flexibility to move and live in base, that' the best way to do it. Your QOL living in base is waaay better than it'd be as a commuter, but every scenario is different. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions. |
I must be the lucky one. From day 1 I did the Mia-Ord commute no problems. Always made first flight.
Lineholder in LGA currently no prolems commuting LGA-MIA or vice versa. And I do this commute on weekends at times flying in same day as well. Things could always change, but at the moment its been mostly a breeze. Don't let the commute thing scare you, if that's what your heart is set on doing do so. I'd rather be living where I want commuting 90% of the time first class on a 2 hour flight than commuting for 2 hours by car stuck on the Cross Bronx. Just plan accordingly always and you should be good to go. |
TPA - FLL via Southwest is a good choice.

There's SilverAirways.....FL based but with a Dulles hub, which is where you may start.....but you can get down there fairly soon......all depends on what level of pain you are willing to endure, and in what form I would guess. There are options....how good they are will be based on your tolerance level.

One More Florida Question
I'm a retired AF pilot, 3500 hrs in 135s and T-1s. Been out of the cockpit for about 3 yrs. Am contemplating leaving the corporate world and returning to the cockpit. I live in Tampa and am researching domicile, commute, carrier options. Thoughts?
