From personal experience tho, choosing to commute when there are plenty of other options is a terrible decision. If you don’t like those companies you listed above go to skywest.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Commuting at Republic as a CA is better then working in base at some of these Regionals considering the huge pay differences involved. LGA, EWR, and DCA are better commuting options at Republic out of ORD than Indy when you take into account the number of flights and commutability of the pairings in base.

If you live on the SE side of Chicago or NE Indiana, IND is really not a bad option. You're drive is just a little over 2 hours.

The result of outstation bases.

it’s a direct result of Republic favoring massive outstations. The flying is still there 40 daily departures the get closer to 50 in the busy months. Check IND and CMH pairings and count how many begin and end with flights through ORD.

Spoken like someone who doesn’t live in base and have been commuting their entire time. Living in base increase ones QOL 10 fold.

Sorry, but there are other carriers that have ORD bases that will serve as solid choices for someone who is looking for ORD to live in base.

Why should should someone subject themselves to commuting to EWR, LGA, and DCA and let alone drive a couple hours to IND from ORD... Man look, Republic is great airline with a good contract. But damn, it ain’t to a point to commute for over when one can live in base at another regional.

I lived in base as an FO and commute as a CA. Not necessarily ORD but I think I have some expertise on the matter.

I tried telling him the same thing. Seems like he’s hell bent on commuting for a regional. We tried.

Ok, you don’t live in a hub base........ You made my point. My point remains the same, I wouldn’t commute for Republic if I am lived in ORD and have multiple options for ORD not only as an FO but as a CA well.

You should already understand, nothing beats driving to work. If we were talking about commuting to ULCC as an option vs living in base for regional, hell I would recommend commuting for a ULCC. But not for a regional when there are options in ones backyard lol.

Come on man lol.

That's great, and I am sure you will have no problem holding ORD as a CA here: https://www.airlinepilotforums.com/t...cancelled.html

come on man yourself, all Regionals are not the same. This isn't 2010 anymore. There can be some very serious consequences that could majorly delay getting to your dream job for picking the wrong Regional these days.

As someone who has made the choice to commute, and would highly value being able to drive to work, I still think you're off base, at least to a point.

Firstly, not all commutes are created equally. A 3 hour, cross-country commute on an OAL is leaps and bounds different from a 30 minute, high frequency, own metal commute.

Secondly, there are enough differences in the regional world these days where it could easily justify commuting. A third year captain at Republic will likely make at least 30K more than a third year captain at GoJet. And probably have more days off. Maybe to some, that's still not worth the price of commuting, but to just make a blanket statement that commuting should be avoided, all else be damned, that's completely misleading.

Commuting from Chicago to Indy, while not ideal, both fits the bill of the commute I described, and is also drivable in a pinch. And speaking personally, I'd gladly do that for an extra 30-40K per year.
