How bad is the captain shortage at RPA?
I know theres a shortage of CA everywhere, but is there a huge imbalance at Republic or does it seem to be pretty stable? They seem to be doing new hire classes every month

Well, the latest numbers from the union are 874 CAs to 992 FOs and spreading apart. The ongoing hiring of FOs (from 60/month to 30/month) despite the decresing number of CAs is likely a bet by RPA that the new-hire contract will stand up in court. Only time will tell as it works its way thru the courts but we should begin to see the first wave of potential upgrades of this group by the end of this year.

Well they were close to being balanced a few months ago but now they're trending away. Think it's currently 120 more FOs than CAs now when a few months ago it was 50. Late summer those first few people to sign the contract last year will start to be eligible to upgrade if they were grinding away I believe.

I don't see why not. The only variable I can foresee is if the new-hire contract gets thrown out by the courts; they would be stuck with a glut of FOs and nothing forcing them to upgrade. At that point, the company would have to reevaluate their strategy.

I'm thinking they'll win that case. Is republic ok with having more FO's than Captains or something? Or is there a max difference they can have?

Typically airlines have slightly more FO than CAs. But yeah, they don't want the imbalance to be too much otherwise you get a negative feedback loop with the diluting of hours to the FOs. It takes them longer to get to upgrade mins. Meaning you have less FOs eligible to upgrade. Meaning you don't have as many upgrades per month. Meaning you increase your CA to FO ratio. Meaning the hours are diluted even more........ repeat
