-600' or -700' (2-2.3 miles) separation is when it gets interesting. -900' (3 miles) should always work unless there's buffoonery involved. Previous a/c has their act together, and works to make the first available turnoff and exits quickly, it works.

Had -600' separation 2 weeks ago. There's a 90 degree turnoff that the majority of guys make. Float, extra speed, long aimpoint, and the next taxiway is a long way down. Guys did a nice job, cleared when we were probably <100', and everyone was happy.

The different runway thing, keep the S.A. dialed up.

Just like with driving a vehicle, one has to drive with allowances to make up for the deficiencies of others. BWTHDIK..
Also if the TCAS target show -10 that's about what you want for snug spacing (assuming eveerybody is on the glide path). Any less and you're tight. Slightly more precise than estimating range between the rings.

AA's got something in their Airbii that uses ADS-B In to provide distance to traffic and X knots faster/slower. Great SA in the terminal area.

-9 is my comfort level unless it's something weird (closed taxiways, following a turboprop, etc).

Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI). Works good, lasts long time.

Do you really think they are habitually getting away with something? They are not using aircraft speeds a metric to clear the next plane. It’s legal. I have had plenty of issues with ATC lately.

Well PHX just cleared a plane to takeoff behind me when I was at 120 knots and our V1 was 151, so I don't think their current system is that safe.

What's your acceleration rate? 10 kts per second? So you'll be at V1 before he's moved 100'? When you get cleared for takeoff how long does it take to hit the TOGA buttons? Just looked at a takeoff replay...it looks like it was about 20 seconds for first advance of the throttles to go about 1000'. You're a couple hundred feet high before the guys moved much. Add in how long it takes the guy to go from holding short to lining up behind you and the you're long off the runway before the guy even gets into position.

What Sliceback said, "Anticipated Separation" is an authorized ATC procedure.

The last few major runway incursions also included a lot of people stepping on each other at critical moments.

I was probably about 5 seconds from V1. That's about as long as it takes for the crew behind us to accept the takeoff clearance. Hopefully, the FO I'm with has the witts to wait for the aircraft behind us to finish their radio transmission before they inform the Tower we are rejecting. And hopefully, the crew behind us isn't too focused on their company's takeoff procedure/callouts to notice.
