China oddly enough has a surprisingly safe airspace system. To the best of my knowedge they have never had a major accident because of ATC. So basically you have a inefficient, overcrowded airspace system that is really pulling through on the saftey sector. Anyone have an opinion on how this happened and is happening? or even better anyone have experience with flying in China they could share?

Does the data even exist to claim they have a safe airspace system? How many errors reported? How is this audited? Are there occurrences we do not hear about? Does not having occurrences in a certain span of time mean it's safer?

We probably don't have access to the data on their technical error rate, which might be sky-high, but the lack of midairs is probably due to a combination of factors.
The answer likely lies in military control, very low traffic density, and zero or essentially zero non-professional pilots. I doubt they allow VFR either.
What errors they might make are salvaged by the big-sky/little airplane principle.

Twin Wasp hit it on the head. Traffic separation is archaic, rough, with wide, wide separation. It's really common to be given 360's enroute places, wide offsets back and forth on course...offset right three miles, then back, then offset again.
China is an up and coming place, but not remotely close to whats here domestically, with regard to aviation and ATC.
