Witnesses didn't see fire or anything. The landing looked survivable.

Amazing they were able to land in what looks to be that little clear patch NNE of the airport (if I understood the article correctly and they did in fact take off to the N/NE.
Sad to hear of the fatalities.

Actually it doesn't look very survivable...evidence of strong head-on impact forces. Given the lack of stationary objects in the vicinity one suspects they hit the ground with the nose well below the horizon and a high vertical rate, ie stall.
