Wow, that is extremely sad.

This is basically a rehash of our concerns in that other thread.
At least "Amelia Earhart" made it. In a glass cockpit. At age 31. With another pilot.
"We had dual GPS and synthetic vision, and that's why we were able to complete the flight!" (Yes, she says this.)

Sad....many prayers for the family.
At that age I was dreaming about rounding third base for home. Not flying around the world.

Who thinks about "flying around the world" at age 17 ? In my opinion these are all ram-rodded by dysfunctional parents with their own ego/self-worth issues. "My son hit a home run at the game last night" Oh yeah, mine flew around the world. Etc etc
In almost all cases, these minor-aged, children, are not waking up and pulling the Bonanza out and going flying around the world that day, all on their own volition.
Sad, but, hey, history repeats itself.

Any ideas as to WHY this plane crashed, just after takeoff?
What was the weather? Were they overloaded? Were they fully fueled, with the right fuel? (not Jet A) Or did the engine just quit?

I don't know about you but when I was 17 I would have jumped at the chance to do something like this, no matter who was funding it. After all I was waking up, pulling the Cessna out, fueling it, just to get 0.5 to 1.0 hours of flying in.

If this kid really loved to fly and died doing what he loved then more power to him. Personally i hate flying single engine at night as it is and wouldn't be caught dead doing it over water. No pun intended.
