Hmm. If you're going to argue this it would be the other way...the obsolete english measuring systems throws a wrench in an otherwise safe, metric, international aviation system.

I highly doubt there is a link, though using standardized systems of measurement and language (cough, Germany & France) should always be a top priority for aviation. 50 years ago you may not have an American, Chinese, Russian, French, and Brazillian airplane within the same thousand miles; now it happens routinely and within less than a hundred miles.

The metric system had nothing to do with this crash.

The only two places (aviation wise) that still use metric is Russia and China. And even THOSE are different. The area the AirAsia flight was operating was using standard Flight Level altitudes.

The last time I flew in Russian airspace a couple of months ago, they were using flight levels. I was under the impression they had transitioned away from meters at least in the enroute structure.

I think they're only using metric below transition, which IMO makes things very confusing when they don't need to be.

If you actually watch the link (painful as it is), she's using the idea of the metric system as a simile for the foreign training system being different but working towards the same end. Nothing about the metric system causing the crash. Typical British tabloid headline.

The problem with 24 hours news is someone has to keep talking even if they don't know anything.

I've heard both meters and flight levels above the transition altitude in the 'Stans
