Default UAL Talks of Demographics of Pilot Ranks

Front page article in today’s Wall Street Journal where UAL has sent out a safety bulletin to pilots about a number of “close calls.” One of things addressed was demographics of the pilot ranks. I guess the new hires were not questioning captains enough in the cockpit when things were out of the comfort zone. Aren’t the new hires ex-military or 8-10 year regional pilots with 6,000 hours and passed the psych test? An attractive talking head on a business channel was asking if this stuff was occurring at other airlines too.

Plenty of airlines put out safety bulletins to their pilots; precious few become front page news.

Clearly a reduction in pay and benefits is in order....

Think of the demand for FOs at regionals 8-10 years ago. If you don't recall, many were hired with the ink still wet on their commercial. What low time guy or gal who is just happy to have a job wants to challenge some grizzled old lifer (or any captain) and risk the job? Well, now those folks have moved on to the big leagues. Some have gotten sorted out, but some are high time and still wet behind the ears.

Enjoy flying single pilot in a two man crew.

UAL and the others kind of created their own problem (or Frankenstein monster). Rather than running their own RJ's and paying those a pilot a real working wage they outsourced it and now they have to deal with getting those pilots into the UAL culture.

I understand your frustration in having your job outsourced. However do you specific knowledge that these incidents have taken place with a 10 year regional puke in the right seat of a UA plane ....or could it be 10 year Naval Aviator? I am not trying to start something here, just a serious question. I would be interested to know the trend.

This isn't news. This is akin to a safety stand down in the military, you just can't close up shop for half a day in the airline world.
