Staffing the airline is the responsibility of management.
Two words, Stockholm Syndrome.
The fact the union has even taken a stance that they must prioritize certain things over others, for only those certain things to become near industry standard, means that their critical thinking skills have been compromised and are in fact, suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. When I worked there, the last TA, the union was trying hard to sell it, as if the Union represented the best interest of the company over the pilots. I am sorry, but the union, to do their job correctly, must take the view point of "industry leading or Mesa can and should go out of business".
They do not, and will never have that viewpoint with the current players volunteering. The pilot group also needs to help themselves and vote with their feet. They are fighting for table scraps, and an upwards or completely different move would bring them rewards far exceeding a 20 year CA position.
I understand that many are trying very hard to leave and cannot for what ever reason. I also understand leaving a CA position to become an FO again really sucks. I hate being an FO again, but the QOL improvement and pay makes it very tolerable.
