If the goal is to one day fly for the airlines professionally, is there any benefit to starting my training on a Cessna 172 equipped with a G1000 instead of the standard 6-pack flight instrument setup?
Talked to a youngster recently looking to get into his first gig. He was hot to trot about touting his g1000 time that he recieved at his fancy 141 college. his first job? flying aircraft 3 times his age with six packs. and he only had g1000 time. some pilots go their whole careers without touching a glass cockpit. They are becoming more of the standard for training, however don't be suprised when you step out into the real world and the fanciest equipment on your ship is a dual VOR receiver with no DME. if you have the time and money, get proficient in both.

If your goal is an airline job or any jet job outside of Africa and sketchy overnight freight, go glass cockpit. Not even close the people who struggle big time at the 121 level are those who don’t have much of any glass time.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the replies.

Once I'm able to get my training started, I'm going to go with the "Standard 6-Pack" set up. Taking everything that I've read into consideration, I think that going that route will in the long run make me a better pilot, which is what I'm after.

Sorry if its a stupid question, but six pack means the regular instruments in the cockpit?

so, but... if you have this garmin 1000 (I have googled it out), you still have the regular instruments, no? just the main thing u use, is this.
If all is electronic, and only a screen, if that is broken, than everything is broken... than how you know what's going on?

I have seen some planes from inside, very modern ones, not like the C152 what I am learning to fly... and really, only two big flat screens and that's it...

Yes, when you're on a G1000 equipped aircraft you still have the airspeed and attitude indicator along with the altimeter which corresponds to the top 3 gauges of the 6 gauge pack. This is available to you in case you no longer have access to the two electronic displays, it'll give you some idea of what is going on.

From what I understand, the main difference between both of these systems is in the instrument eye scan required for safe flight, and from what I learned via this thread is that it is easier to go from the standard 6pack gauges like those in your C152 to the G1000, and a bit from difficult the other way around. Therefore, you're on the right path and when the time comes you shouldn't have too much trouble moving on to the larger electronic displays. Goodluck with your training!
