Quote: Wouldn't hold my breath... Currently over staffed and management has announced closing all bases east of Texas within 12 months
Why would they do that?

To focus all assets (pilots and aircraft) in the southwestern US.

There are so many pilots based on the 'East Coast' (20 to be exact) that will be interesting to see how that plays out. Either a lot of commuting or turn over. Could be by design.

Questions in Regards to Upgrades on X Side
So if to move to the left seat requires an unrestricted ATP, a few hours in type and a recommendation from the chief pilot, has there been a situation where due to personality conflicts a recommendation was not given? And if so how was that addressed? I am just concerned that under this system it can turn into a high school type situation where promotions are given based on how well a person is liked and not on person’s merit and experiences.

I actually can’t think of anyone who has been denied upgrade based on their personality, it’s not a political thing at all and definitely does not appear to be going that way.

The more common scenario is a retired 787 driver comes over and just has no idea how to operate 4-5 legs a day, 20 minute turns, no VNAV or autothrottle etc. Instead of them upgrading right away they will sit in the right seat a little longer until fully acclimated and then they’ll upgrade them. This isn’t always the case but just an example of why the system is the way it is. Overall it’s still seniority + vacancy but “merit” is considered for the reasons above.

The rec comes from check airmen or standards captains not the chief pilot so there’s some checks and balances from that as well.

My $.02 at least.

Thank you. That was very well explained.
