For the guys who retire from 121 and go to the fractionals/corporate, do they do it for fun flying or do they need the money?

Quick question/advice. An old guy here (62) with lotso overall flying time but I have only been flying part-time recently. Military, CFI, etc. with a lonely 737 type never used. Looking to get back into the game full-time (without working too hard). I am not in it for the $. Rather QOL and "fun" flying.

Thoughts/ideas???

The problem with the guys that do it for "fun" and don't care about the pay is that they lower the pay bar for the guys that want to do it for a living. Not that far removed from someone crossing a picket line to "feed their family".

If he has the time, he would start as captain.

Agree totally with this statement. I find 121 pilots to be some of the best procedural and safe pilots to fly with. But if you step in and start doing it for lunch at a corporate part 91 gig. That’s a $#!+ $+!<€ move. Your reputation will precede you and you’ll be flying a kite. I think that retired 121 pilots should value their experience and training and should be compensated as such. Never low ball a millionaire or for that matter a billionaire. Do what’s right by the industry of having people’s lives in your hands.

Your problem is with the market, not some guy who values his labor in a manner that is problematic for you personally. Fundamentally, every one of us knew well what he/she was doing when we pursued as a career an activity that a lot of old rich guys would (or do) do for fun.

If you don’t want to duke it out in the labor market with people who “do it for fun,” you should’ve been an accountant.

Thats complete BS.
You apply for a job that pays what you want/need which is commensurate with your overall experience, type ratings and specific experience relevant to the job.
You don’t sit down on the interview and say you’ll work for less then advertised.
Fun jobs that can’t pay enough to attract the entitled masses rely on time-builders and retired pilots.
Traffic watch, sight seeing and puddle jumping.
None of those threaten the food on the table of your precious young ‘uns.
This is not coal mining.

exactly my point. I've lost a job because a retiree "wanted to live where the plane was" and was willing to do it for less. You want to pick up a retirement job,,, don't undercut those that are doing it for a living. If you don't need the money and are doing it for fun,,, take up golf

If you need the money and aren’t doing it for fun, take up accounting, engineering, IT, or literally any job that old rich guys won’t do for less than you because it’s fun.

It’s nobody’s fault but your own that you chose to make a living doing something that lots of people would do for less, or for free, or would even pay to do.
