Okay, it’s been over 30 years since I exited the Military. Back then you incurred a 2 year commitment. Is it the same nowadays?

My youngest is a 1st Lt in the Army. His active duty commitment is 3 years which is up in early November 2019. Will he add (approx 15 months if he moved now) to his time if he doesn’t put in that he is getting out when his active duty commitment is up? He was ROTC and says he has a 3 year active duty and 4 years reserve commitment.

Denny you still get a 2 year concurrent ADSC extension. I was originally eligible to get out in June of 18. I PCS’d in Sep ‘16 and reset my commitment to Sep ‘18.

Thanks. If he doesn’t want to extend, I assume he needs to put in his paperwork (DOS). By doing this the Army can still move him just not extend his active duty commitment. Correct?

Hey, something I can actually contribute intelligently about.

My knowledge is AF specific but it is likely a DOD rule. It depends on the PCS, OCONUS to CONUS is 1 year commitment, CONUS to CONUS is 2 years, CONUS to OCONUS is driven by your DEROS, usually 2 years with no dependents and 3 years with dependents.

If he would incur any commitment past his current one, he can turn down that commitment and they can either waive it and PCS him or keep him in place, with an established DOS.

Thanks for the info. I just talked to him and the move is from Kansas to Missouri. Not far. He asked his battalion XO and the XO said it was a 1 year commitment. I told him he might want to check with the base personnel office or the Army personnel office (where ever that is) about the length. If it's one year, he's okay with that. It would extend him about 5 months.

How he could have a 7 years total commitment? I’m ROTC 2LT. With 8 years commitment, I’m reserve component, that might be the cause of a year less of service 🤔

I thought his commitment was 3 years total but he’s telling me it 3 years active and 4 reserve. Long story but he did not go thru on a scholarship (my fault but then again......I paid for it) hence the 3vs4 year active duty commitment.
