Quote: Currently a captain in 121. Considering a lateral to Republic to get EWR and stop commuting. What are the chances of holding EWR as FO out of training these days and what could I expect for an upgrade timeframe assuming I currently meet all requirements including 2500TT?
To answer the question asked, the current jr FO at EWR appears to be still in training.
I think this is fairly consistent. I couldn't hold it out of training in 2018, (got LGA) and put it in as a standing bid, I was asked to transfer early, something like 3-4 mos early. Point being, it wouldn't take long if you didn't get it out of training. I'd say your chances are good.

If you are looking at staying in EWR as a Captain, the jr Capt on the line appears to be a 6/18 hire. Looks like the Jr award for upgrade starting in Oct is a 10/18 hire, upgrade effective 12/1/21 If you're in 121 already, you know it changes all the time and no one can really tell you what to "expect."

When things were really moving pre-Covid, I would say you could've started upgrade training in a little over 14 ish mos. A couple of my classmates did.

I can’t comment on the upgrade side of things, but every class since the beginning of July has gotten pretty much whatever base they wanted - with the exception of ORD & PIT. It looks like EWR is pretty junior on the FO side of things right now.

May I jump in and ask about Boston? Fo and upgrade times as they sit. I am also 121 former xjt went somewhere else and phone screen on Monday. Thanks

Nobody’s had a problem holding Boston out of training. No idea on the upgrade times. Probably less than 18 months for someone fresh out of training today. Currently lots of open red time all over the place and reserves are getting a workout, too.

I think generally speaking upgrade times are over inflated because of the lost year due to COVID.

Personally, if I were a new hire, I'd look at the junior upgrade (which is currently 10/30/18), knock a year off of that because of COVID, and then subtract another 6 months because of how much attrition/movement there is.

You can also look at how many FOs there currently are behind the junior upgrade (roughly 700), and divide by a reasonable number of monthly upgrades (40).

Both of them yield 18-24 months, and as long as the current situation continues, that may continue to come down.

The limiting factor will really be how much throughput the training department can handle for the foreseeable future.

Boston is probably the most junior base on the CA side, and just about to most junior base for FO. BOS/LGA/EWR are all so junior for FO's it's hard to compare.

Currently, PHL is the junior CA base. That said, LGA and BOS should be attainable within a month of the initial award. I expect it will fluctuate month-to-month between these three. EWR is probably not terribly far behind, although the movement there will be slower than LGA and BOS.

How is PHL on the FO side?

August Seniority List shows the four junior FOs to be in New Hire Class. So, if things stay the same, you could likely get it out of training. However, things rarely stay the same in this line of work....

ORD FO
I’ve been searching the threads and haven’t really been able to find a clear answer. I know ORD is a super senior base for captains, but I’ve been reading conflicting information on if it’s attainable as an FO.

Would I be able to hold ORD as a new hire?

I’m about 4 months out from ATP mins, and Republic is my top choice. I’d like to be ORD based wherever I end up. Once I upgrade to captain, I’ll probably move to DC since it’ll be next to impossible to have ORD CA.
