I just got a May 5th class date and I'm planning to move my family to where ever I get based. Since we don't know our base until training starts, I'll likely have to move sometime during training. We're in Utah right now so it'll probably take at least 2-3 days to knock it all out. Is there time in the training schedule that would allow us to move? If possible, I'd prefer to move before the end of training so I'm not commuting nearly across the US just to sit reserve. Thanks!

That's a tough one. There are two weeks where you're at home studying systems on the iPad, but I can't in good conscience recommend taking 2-3 full days away from studying to move. The expectation is you working 4+ hours a day on Ethos, and participating in the group chats/questions posed by the instructors.

You will likely have some break between systems and EFPTs, unless you're in the first group to go. And again between your LOE and IOE, at least enough to move.

That would be my advice. Wait until you get your schedule, and plan to move before you start IOE. You'll likely have at least a few days. You could also probably work with our training logistics to create a gap.

Yeah, I don't think I'd want to try and move during the two weeks of home study. I wasn't sure if there were actual breaks in the schedule or if it non stop. I'll probably talk to them and see if there's anything I can work out. Thanks for the advice!

You are contractually guaranteed 5 days off between your checkride and beginning IOE.

No built in breaks during training other than the 5 days mentioned above. I highly recommend not attempting to move during training and bringing all the stress that comes along with it. This has bad idea written all over it.

I moved in with family temporarily during training. Where I lived before was going to be a 2 leg commute for republic and I had no ties there. Rather than pay rent, I was able to bunk with family. I had two days off between indoc/gos and Ethos which allowed me to get all my stuff packed up, drive to my temporary location, put all the crap in a storage locker, and continue on ETHOS. I am not moving anything or seriously searching for apartments until I pass the checkride/line check and they release me into the wild. I would hate to move all my crap somewhere only to fail training and be stuck.

I would suggest you wait until you finish all the training to move. No reason to add on the additional stress that comes with moving during training.

edit: and tbh I haven't had any time to move more than I did initially. All sim sessions have been at midnight, which means I don't wake up till 1-2pm, and days off are spent chilling out and studying. I wouldn't want to have to travel home, move, then travel back to training just to do 10-2 sim sessions for 5 more days.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like we’ll be moving after training...and maybe even after IOE. The move isn’t worth messing up training/studying!

There’s a delay with OE that was 3 weeks in December. That may have changed and I wouldn’t count on it, I’d plan for maybe 3- 7 days so you don’t make plans. Once in class you will meet people and also people in the class ahead of you. Ask them what their waits are that will be a pretty accurate estimate. What I would do is that plus non rev to the bases. Get a rental car and check communities out. Or have the wife pick a job somewhere and go there. I just moved to where ever my wife could get paid the most.
Also if your reserve somewhere you can explore too when your not being used.

There really isn't time off during training except for the 2 weeks at home for ETHOS, but I really wouldn't consider this as open time. Most of the delay in training comes from waiting for an IOE slot after LOE. Especially now that classes are running weekly, I'd imagine the IOE delay is gonna get worse, I've heard the average is 3 weeks right now. That would probably be the best time to move because you've already passed everything so you really don't need to be hitting the books at that point.
