I'm new at my regional, and get the occasional ALPA email talking about whats going in the company. If you work with me, you probably read this same email.

Quote:
The story begins with the wedding engagement of a ___ pilot. As his wedding date approached, the pilot bid for a short three days off to attend his own wedding ceremony – undoubtedly, one of the most important events in anyone’s life. He got two of the three days off, but the problem was that last day. He tried to trade it away and to drop it, with no luck. As the big day approached, he finally requested personal leave, but incredibly, that was not granted. In desperation, he called in sick to attend his own wedding.

When our management learned of this, they gave him a lovely wedding gift – a termination letter! This is a true story. Of course, your union is filing a grievance, which, if denied, will proceed to arbitration. We never condone the improper use of sick time, but this pilot should not have been put in this situation! In addition, the concept of terminating pilots to prevent short staffing problems is just wrong.
So being a new airline pilot and being new to ALPA, I still think can't we all just get along?! Pretty much ALPA says, your manangement and esentially your chief pilots are really out to screw you. They really don't care if you are there or not. Then when we meet with chief pilots, they say, anytime we need anything, such as family emergenies, or other engagements, please call, and we will always help you out.

I just wanted to hear if there are any other stories like the one above.

Anybody out there miss the birth of your child? I'm willing to bet there have been a few out there. That's something I worry about going in.

I know someone who called in sick so he could attend his wedding. Luckily he didn't get caught. Bottom line is, its a business. They are in it to make money. I trust management about as far as I can throw them. This holds true for ANY business, not just the airline industry.

Pinnacle, right?

Was the pilot in the email on probation? If not, I'd think the very worst that could happen is an "Unavailable" and perhaps a letter in the personnel file, and/or a verbal counseling.

My very first day on property I talked to the CP in person about getting some time off for my wedding, 5+ months in the future. Said it would be "no problem!" Two months went by and I still hadn't gotten it in writing, so I sent an email to the ACP. He said fill out a PTO form for records, but it shouldn't be a problem...and it wasn't. Got 5 company PTO days (which sat nicely over 5 RSV days) and with some creative swapping of RSV days I had 14 days off before, during, and after my wedding.

There might have been other ways for this guy to go about things, but terminating somebody because they called off FOR THEIR FREAKING WEDDING? YGBSM. Hell, management might have even done him a favor there...

you should never miss the birth of your baby. save up some money and take FMLA starting 1 week prior to birth, and 3 weeks after. thats what i did and federal law says you can.

dont think it is pinnacle, i haven't seen or heard anything about this, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen here... you are right, he will get his job back and management will pay...

What condition would the said pilot's mind be in if he had to go to work on his wedding day? Sounds like a valid call off day to me, especially if he had the sick time available.

If you want the day off, request leave in advance.

If you NEED the day off, call in sick without prior notice.

I learned that working for the government.
