The story begins with the wedding engagement of a ___ pilot. As his wedding date approached, the pilot bid for a short three days off to attend his own wedding ceremony – undoubtedly, one of the most important events in anyone’s life. He got two of the three days off, but the problem was that last day. He tried to trade it away and to drop it, with no luck. As the big day approached, he finally requested personal leave, but incredibly, that was not granted. In desperation, he called in sick to attend his own wedding.
When our management learned of this, they gave him a lovely wedding gift – a termination letter! This is a true story. Of course, your union is filing a grievance, which, if denied, will proceed to arbitration. We never condone the improper use of sick time, but this pilot should not have been put in this situation! In addition, the concept of terminating pilots to prevent short staffing problems is just wrong.
So being a new airline pilot and being new to ALPA, I still think can't we all just get along?! Pretty much ALPA says, your manangement and esentially your chief pilots are really out to screw you. They really don't care if you are there or not. Then when we meet with chief pilots, they say, anytime we need anything, such as family emergenies, or other engagements, please call, and we will always help you out. I just wanted to hear if there are any other stories like the one above.
