Newnan is out southwest of town on 85. It's a small town with a square that has some very nice golf course communities developing around it.

How's the area west of the airport (about 15-20 DME 9R)? Looked like a nice area, without an insane amount of traffic/developement while flying over.

If you are looking to think outside the "local box", I have found living south of Macon in Houston County workable. Like what has been said in previous inputs, this state varies so much from county to county (schools, housing, etc..). Houston County has Warner Robins (w/Robins AFB) & Perry as it's 2 major towns with country living & smaller towns around the area. South of Warner Robins has excellent schools. As for the commute, it is approximately 100 miles straight north on I-75. During normal hours I could make the 2 hour call out on reserve & for those times of the day when traffic might be an isssue (3:30 - 6:00), I would hang out in North Macon (30 - 45 min closer). The distance may sound like alot, but I have friends living in North & Northeast ATL that take just as long to get to work. As often as we work, the commute is workable. FYI, with an AF base nearby, there are a lot of ex-military living in the area & flying for all carriers out of ATL (DAL, AirTran, UPS, FedEx, AAL). Cost of living is obviously lower than the ATL area.

As for Macon & Bibb county they have an awful Public school system. Most people I know living there put their kids in private schools (they have good ones). An area that is growing is Forsyth (Monroe County). With Henry County having exploded, it is the next one south with any potential & nearby North Macon is where alot of new businesses are going in.

If you're going to live that far south, just make sure you aren't in the "Gnat Belt". It's horrible.

OK, here is the challenge for the locals in ATL. As I just got hired by DAL, I am looking to move as well and have NFC about ATL. I want to live within 2 hours due to reserve for a while. I want to be close, but not in, an upscale shopping area so wifey can continue what she is doing here in Las Vegas. I would prefer a one story house on a flat lot with a possibilty to build a shop on it (so I can continue to build hot rods for people...). Any idea as to where I should start looking? No kids, one dog, wifey and me...

If you're looking for some land and/or very reasonable property taxes consider looking out I-20E in Newton (Covington) or Rockdale (Conyers) Counties. It'll be about a 45-60 min drive to the airport but you can get a lot more for your dollar, not to mention a little peace and quiet.

City is in Fayette County. DO NOT buy where you will have to put the kiddies in Fayette County schools."

Peachtree City Schools are Fayette County Schools. As a whole they are all good, but like any county you need to look at each schools statistics individually. There is lots of growth in Fayette right now, which means lots of movement of the student population by the School Board. Their actions don't always make sense either. There was a big shift in the Middle schools this year and the School Board is currently working on shifting as many as 2400 Elementary students for 2008-2009. So be careful when buying if you have a specific school in mind. I have lived here for 3 years now with elementary aged kids and so far, I am happy with the schools. Although to be fair..I have no other frame of reference since they have only gone to school here. Best of luck to you!

I live in Acworth up in Paulding County. Great schools, nice people and a well "set up town" if you know what i mean. About 45 minutes no traffic to the airport.

Check out Cobb county too, more great schools.
