Those contracts were signed under the previous regime when oil was cheap. A contract is a contract only has meaning when it's a good deal for management. Otherwise, it's not worth the paper it's written on.
Plus, and I don't mean this as a slam, but if you are providing lift as a contractor, you will always be vulnerable to the whims of the mainline. Regional partners come and go. That has always been the game and it will stay that way. It's nothing personal, it's just the airline business. No one ever mentions the dark, seedy, underbelly of the beast in those slick ads for those flight academies.
