Quote: At first I didn't have a lot of options because of limited recency of experience. I took a teaching gig a few years ago because of family issues and needed to be home every night for a while. I'll admit I got lazy. One year led to two which led to three, etc. I'm qualified for the majors on paper but the kiss of death was recency. Even with all my airline and corporate contacts (including personal friends with an aviation director of a Fortune 10 company) it all came down to the same problem - made the short list but the guy sitting next to me was current, qualified, and typed. I felt JB really did "hire the person" not the pedigree. Current offer is based on my academic background and other safety work so it's not a flying job. Very interesting but not flying.
Cog's ladder. Pay bills first. Worry about other stuff later.

Gaps in employment are one of the chief causes of longer gaps in employment.

Quote: Unless there's a training contract in that other offer, the decision to take it is a no-brainer. If you are midway through training, in IOE, or on the line a month and you get a class date from JB, don't feel any pressure not to take it. .
I just couldn't go in knowing I would be leaving in less than a few months. Even though I'm type rated in the equipment they fly. I also felt this might delay the process because of additional background and PRIA; and, perhaps open me up to a training failure (I have none). And honestly given the salary I'd make more at Home Depot and not have to commute. Yep, a regional. But it was an avenue to currency. JB called me for an interview during this process and I deferred the class twice until I finally had to pull the trigger and tell the other guys no. For me the decision would bother me - knowing I was going to leave short term. I know that's a personal decision for each of us.

I struggled with the decision, I just felt there was an ethical issue associated with it.
I agree there's an ethical issue associated. Several actually. One of them is that the employer has built a business model which relies on not paying competitive benefits and/or providing competitive QOL offsets.

If you have promised to stay X years, that's one thing. Otherwise, when a better offer arises, walk in to your supervisor's office, drop that offer in the table, and ask if the company can match or beat it.

If the answer is no, the only thing you owe them is two weeks' notice.

Btw, As to the rest of the story, I'm completely with you. You can work at Home Depot and make enough more to keep current flying on the side, and still have better QOL than sitting right seat at a regional.

Blindbingo, do you mind me asking if you had a blue dart? From what I'm seeing/being told, you need about 5000tt/a couple thousand tpic/to be a check airman or chief pilot to get hired there.

Congrats to all you who got the phase II emails. I was in the late Feb group and it took almost two weeks to get the Phase II emails. Wish you all the best and that we see you in training.

Congrats to everyone who's moving on.

Could those of you who haven't already posted your hours and background please post so we can see if there is a new trend for recent hiring classes?

Thanx
