Naw, I was an FE at the time. One night the Capt threatened to go back to the gate and have her replaced!

Dear Captains-

Please START THE FREAKING APU!!!!!!!

As you may recall, the FO has been out for a walkabout in the heat or cold, has crawled all around the courier area, has just completed a Texas cage match with that ********ng yellow cooler strap, and done a contortionist routine to check the haz. Nothing is more irritating than sitting down after that in a cockpit that feels like a meat cooler or, worse yet, an old folks home in Florida on a July afternoon.

3:30am is enough physical stress to degrade our performance (all of us). Don't add to it by making it extra miserable. It's a seemingly small thing over which you have total control.

Thanks in advance,

Pipe

Read the FCIF; "The Air Ops team has established temperature guidelines agreed to by Maintenance..." and so on

Did they tell us these temp guidelines? No! In my book equivalent to lying (half truths etc.)

Its nice that they agreed with maintenance about this but why were we left out?

And are the agreed temps outside temps? Or actual cockpit temps? Only the one matters to me.

On a slightly different subject ...

In a previous life at another airline, we had a policy of shutting down the #3 engine after landing (this sometimes morphed to shutting down while on the high speed turnoff) on our 727's. It wasn't an "official" fuel saving measure but we were easy to convince that saving a little bit of gas was good for everybody's future.

Long story short ... we also changed more #3 engines. Was it because they didn't get adequate cooling time?

Did we really save any money in the long run? Enquiring minds want to know ...

What a great opportunity for leadership, unity and communication

Everyone should do their part

I think you'll find maintenance are not a big fan of this either. Starting the APU so late gives us no chance of addressing any no start or power transfer issues without an instant delay.

Mgt has requested I delay starting the APU until getting the final, Mgt will not be in my cockpit to manage my decision.

Norm for me is getting the water and using a set of nail clippers to get the dreaded yellow strangler.

Norm for me is doing the interior safety check, then if I'm uncomfortable-I start the APU. When my FO arrives, I tend to speak kronan and ask for my FOs perception of the temp. If my FO is uncomfortable, I start the APU.

If I become aware the loaders are uncomfortable, or live animals are being loaded, I start the APU.

Any Capt unwilling to start the APU for his FO is hopefully told at the end of the trip that said FO will avoid the Capt in the future....if you're not willing to listen when I say I'm cold, are you really going to listen when I say unstable go around-gear?

How bout we comply with this new fuel (management cost savings/MBO/flight manager bonus multiplier) when they can finally get the rampers at the ramp when we arrive. I love saving all this gas only to see it burned away waiting 5/10 minutes for a different cost center to show up.

Enos, I like that. I planned all along to retire with no FCIF but now I'm thinking I might change my mind.

"Cost Center (insert employee #)xxxxx is no longer costing the company as much money now. See ya."
