Officials who are reluctant to contain travel from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone have a surprise in store for them: political correctness will go right out the window among the American public if and when more cases arise. People of every race and every political persuasion will demand that the doors be shut. We can do it now and probably avoid those additional cases or we can invite tragedy and then gain wisdom at the cost of people's lives.

Try this. Put an air embargo around the area. Enforce it with French Mirages and American fighters for 6 months. Set up treatment areas there, but nobody leaves…except cleared military and medical personal who quarantine on the way back (think Lajes, Guantanamo Bay, Bermuda, etc.)

A panacea? Of course not. But letting every west African with the sniffles run to his American cousins for a cure is going to kill a lot of innocent Americans, many of whom will wake up quite ****ed if this kills their kids. A man who loses his family has nothing left to lose, and there will be hell to pay if political correctness ends up spreading a disease with 90% mortality rate stateside.

FYI…Emirates has already stopped service. If KLM, Air France, and a few other nations did as well the air embargo could at least mitigate some of the risk.

No need for fighters flying top cover. We need "Passport Profiling"

We admit up front that we are profiling people based solely on their passport. If you hold a passport from INSERT_NAME_OF_COUNTRY_HERE, then you can be singled out for "special" treatment.

If we see Liberia or Guinea on the passport, we say "Sorry, you're not allowed." If we see Saudi Arabia on the passport, we give them extra scrutiny...and maybe tell them to leave their burqas at home. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

Not a bad plan, but no mention of aggressively pursuing a cure. Why? Because if that's not part of the plan, we are just kicking a deadly can down the road. We will come back to it again.

HIV provides an interesting comparison. HIV is transmitted like Ebola, but is much less contagious than Ebola. How many people are walking around the U.S. with HIV? And could you pick them out as you walk through the mall, political correctness or not? I'm simply saying we should be more concerned with putting our arms around the disease rather than just those who currently have it. Not much talk about that on the airwaves.

Additionally some dude in a cave or a tent somewhere is trying to figure out how to get Ebola onto a cruise ship or into the misters at Disney in July. There is no quarantine large enough for that.

Please if you know of someone who only needs a little money to find a cure for Ebola give his address. I'll send him a hunded or two. Sometimes money is not the answer, if it were aides and cancer would be thought of as polio. By all means fund a cure but until then fund prevention.

But, the risks of Ebola and HIV are not equivalent

My in law with a Masters in Public Health from Columbia would disagree with you. The contagiousness is much different, not the transmission. Subtle but significant difference.

One may have Ebola and never die too. 50 to 80% mortality rate is not 100%. Magic had/has world class health care, the masses, including us, won't.

My point exactly, this occurred after millions if not billions were spent doing so. Are we doing this now or are we ONLY focused on checking passports and taking temperatures.

When HIV was first noticed in the U.S., the fear and panic was very similar to what we have now and if you are the one who gets either one, the risks will feel exactly the same.
