DWI/Alcohol Abuse Question

Subscribe
Afternoon All,

In 2011 I was arrested for a DWI and lost my medical certificate. At the time I did not pursue getting my medical reinstated and instead focused on sobriety and getting my life back in order. I attended a 28 day treatment facility and have been sober since the incident. After 3 1/2 years I've decided to try in get back in the cockpit. I went to the AME for an examination and of course it was deferred, which I was expecting. I just received my letter from the FAA statING the required steps to get medical approved.

-Copies of pertinent treatment records
-A detailed statement from myself regaregarding past and presentertainment alcohol use.
-At least 3 letters from a responsible individual such as a counselor, employer, physician, minister.
-Police/investigation report
-Copies of court records
-All records associted with care/treatment of alcohol abuse
-Complete copy of my driving record.

The DWI was reduced to a reckless operation although I do have a DWI conviction from 2003 that has been previously reported to the FAA. I have all the requested documentation above.

My questions are,

What are my chances of getting my medical certificate back?

Who long does the process take?

Are there any other steps I should take to increase the odds of rein statement?

Thank you in advance

I'm confidant you'll get it back after jumping through the requisite hoops. You did treatment, and have been abstaining for 3+ years so assuming you can prove that to the FAA's satisfaction they should have no grounds for withholding a medical.

Just as those stated above especially what rickair7777 said about jumping through all the hoops. Prepare yourself.

May I just add that you may want to also prepare yourself for what is called a HIMS evaluation. The FAA may or may not require you to get this evaluation. Each case is reviewed separately and on an individual basis. This evaluation has two parts; neuro-psychological and psychiatric. These exams vary in cost. Usually from $2300-$3200 depending on where you're located. In addition, you'll have to secure the services of a HIMS AME. This is the AME that will actually approve/issue you your Special Issuance (SI) medical certificate if I'm not mistaken. As it sounds, you shouldn't have any problems.

All the best my friend. Blue skies.
