I have one self built and it cost about $200 for everything. Dual band with GPS. Highly recommended, it works well in my location (Miami) and I use it with foreflight. Here is the website for more info:

Quote: No kit. Pieced it together myself. Not an engineer but comfortable around electronics. Bought the Pi locally and splurged on a Pi case. Not considering a custom case yet, but I've learned that UPS Stores are installing 3D printers for public use. I'm guessing that FedEx Kinkos will be next.
Try www.3dhubs.com they should be cheaper (significantly) than UPS store.

WAG, since about Aug/Sep 2015. I first read about just before Turkey day, but didn't build until RPi3 and the GPS code was stable with the adoption of the VK172 last month.

AMNegron - have you had good luck with the vk172?

Open flight solutions posted recently that the VK172 has been a "marginal performer" and now recommend a USB remote mount gps antenna.

Yes. When the unit has a clear view, quick lock-ons and typically under 5m accuracy (on the glare shield). When moved to a side window, accuracy drops to about 10-15m. At times as many as 15+ satellites tracked.

Read far enough down in any of the forums/sites, every component has issues. The best part of this is that YOU build whichever form you need or desire...don't let OpenFlightSolutions dictate your needs.

@AMNegron - Steve from Open Flight Solutions. here. To explain: I've bought about 1000 VK-172 GPS modules and I've rejected or replaced close to 100. We've also found that it is extremely sensitive to voltage issues - either under-volt or voltage fluctuation. If you're using it with the Pi 3 that can pose a problem.

When it works, the VK-172 is a good GPS, but between the quality variation and the voltage sensitivity it causes enough issues that I don't want to base my reputation and business on it. So we now offer several options: go with no GPS if your table has a good GPS; go with the remote GPS if you need a very solid GPS; go with the VK-172 (available as an optional accessory) if you want to save space - just be aware of the potential issues.

I hope that all makes sense. Thanks!

Steve

I picked up a VK-162GPS off Amazon, $18.99. Unfortunately they are showing out of stock right now with no ETA. Here's what I get, this is in a 172 with the GPS mounted at the top of the windshield:
