Using FAR 61 Training towards FAR 141 ?

All,

Just curious how any instructors on this forum, have had students who have FAR Part 61 flight hours can use those training hours towards any ratings to be acquired under FAR 141. More specifically, can students training for the R-ATP minimums use FAR 61 hours towards ratings that they are trying to acquire under FAR Part 141 and how many. Is it a percentage of hours? Do they need to log all hours from an approved 141 school or university? On the FAA 8710, you check the box for the type of practical test training you received. Is that the determining factor, when you fill out the 8710? Thanks in advance for any positive feedback.

The only one where you can use part 61 hours in a 141 program is the cross country time building for commercial and is limited to 25% of the hours flown under part 61. The rest of the training needs to follow the syllabus.

I don't understand your question about the 8710.

Different 141 schools can have different rules on that.

Generally you can apply some total time as determined by the school (max 25% for 61 to 141), and the school will need to evaluate your flying skills and aeronautical knowledge in order to determine how much credit to grant.

141 does not prohibit skipping parts of the syllabus, if the school determines your skill is sufficient.

If a certain school (like Wink's) doesn't want to give you reasonable credit, you can always shop around although any 141 school will most likely charge you for the flight evaluation.

My question per regards to the -8710 had to do with Part II. Certificate or Rating Applied For on the Basis of: A) Completion of Required Test, B) Military Competency, or C) Graduate of Approved Course (which I take to mean a 141 course).
I have only taught at the FAR Part 61 level and that was a long time ago and I am dusting off my instructor ratings and trying to help a student make some decisions between FAR 61 and 141 for his future flight training needs. It sounds like 25% might be the most accurate number I have heard so far.
