Been at SKW 7 years and not ever heard of giving a “weather warning.” If weather is below minimums you can’t launch anyways. I agree with the OP. I never talk about an alternate and don’t say we might not get in. Only say something when you are actually going to land at your alternate. Flew with a captain once that said we have an alternate of XYZ when the ceiling was 1200 feet at our destination. The poor FA’s had to field questions about why we weren’t going to our destination for 3 hours.

121.613 No person may dispatch or release an aircraft unless the weather reports or forecasts or any combination thereof, indicate that the weather will be at or above the authorized minimums at the ETA.
I'll back pedal my original statement but it's still half true. If your flight is less than an hour, the METAR is controlling and if it's below landing mins you can't go. I've been called by dispatch numerous times to tell me not to go for this very reason.
