No I don't think it's exactly right. It doesn't pre-emptively start screwing people partway through the bid (it's not that smart), it runs all the way through to the bottom and THEN goes looking back up from the bottom for holes into which it can stick leftover trips.

The junior folks don't have big enough holes. Roughly around 50-15% is the danger zone. *Typically* by the time it gets back up to the top it's already assigned all the CN's but that's not an absolute, it's theoretically possible for the #1 guy to get hosed too (unless he had vacay of course).

That's how it was explained to me in detail, using layer reports.

I was also able to avoid CN's for years after that by placing trips around the 25th so CN's wouldn't be legal. YMMV.

The best trick around Christmas or Thanksgiving at OO is to bid a standup that starts the night before (ie the 23rd for Christmas). Then bid another one on the 25th. Yes, you'll be in a hotel on the nights of the 23rd and 25th, but you'll be home from Christmas Eve morning (24th) through Christmas Day evening (25th). PBS will see that you're working on both the 24th and 25th, so the odds of you being CN'd a 4 day over those days are basically nil.

Of course, this only really works if you live in base. Not such a great trick for commuters...

I was at OO for 13 years and never worked a Christmas. Guess I got lucky.

Depending on your base It also only works if you're senior enough to have this trick work.
Some senior guys who don't like standups suck it up for three or four nights a year and pull this trick, so it doesn't always work.

There are a variety of tricks but the good news is if you're senior enough to *deserve* X-mas off, you're probably senior enough to build your schedule creatively. Not everybody even knows that they have to do that. If you're junior, just waive the two days off and bid for x-mas off in every layer (the ONLY bid in layer 7)... you might be surprised.

You have to be willing to sacrifice the rest of the month... or you could enjoy a sweet month (relative to your seniority) and just suck it up on the 25th.

Could have been right place, right time with your relative seniority. I had it off more than half of the years I was there and I never spent much time above 50% in any seat. It can be done
