And what you will next learn is that the lawyer ALWAYS gets paid, no matter if they can do squat for you or not.

It doesn't hurt to speak with a contract lawyer, or any lawyer for that matter. A good lawyer will let you know if it's worth your time and money to pursue. Years ago, I had an insurance company try to get $15K from me. It sounded like they might have a case, but I asked a lawyer. He was like a bull dog and said they had nothing. One phone call from him and I never heard from the insurance company again. The lawyer billed me $400 and I was happy to pay. A good lawyer can tell you in 5 seconds if it's worth your time.

Do they want the lump sum payout back or are they willing to do a payment plan? Asking for a, uh friend, who might be leaving but hasnt been 2 years yet

No way would SkyWest offer a payment plan! They gave you the money in one lump sum and the contract saws repayment of all monies if you don’t give 2 years. They are not in the business of lending money to pilots who bail to another airline. I can’t blame them.

Sounds like you are out of luck on this one. If you signed a contract that has that 2 year commitment in it, legally you are basically saying you agree to the commitment.

They've offered a payment plan 6, 12, 18 months.

That's kind of surprising. Good deal!

I’m shocked! They aren’t charging interest, are they?

Unfortunately if you signed a revised contract with a time clause and didn't fulfill that time clause, you will have to repay that money regardless of what the original contract was. You're going to end up spending/losing even more money in lawyer fees trying to fight it. Take the repayment plan to avoid it going to collections and have peace of mind you're making better money at the next company.
