I always wear a hat in uniform. I think it looks professional and to me the uniform just seems incomplete without it. My airline has a policy of "hats on at all times in view of the flying public". But even before when they were optional, I wear one. Mabye its because I got used to it in the military, but honestly " why do some guys not like the hats? They shade your face on sunny days on the tarmac, and its not like they are uncomfortable, and your headset is what messes up your hair, and I would argue if the hat or headset messes up your hair its too long anyway....:p. Seriously why is it some guys dont like them? Frankly I think they look stupid. Also, I find them to be quite uncomfortable, especially in the summer. The sweaty head look just doesn't work for me. |

No hat is required at SkyWest*
*If you choose to wear a uniform piece that lessens the conspicuousness of your position as a crewmember (IE a trench coat or black sweater, sweater vest, cardigan that doesn't have epaulets or wings on it) you have to wear the hat. I think the idea behind it is so that when you're on the ramp, airport personnel don't get worried that some dude in a mustache and a black trench coat is tampering with an airplane. |
Wheel hats worn on the ramp are a FOD hazard. Unless they are secure on the head, which a wheel hat isn't, they should be left in the cockpit. Which is cheaper, an engine replacement from a hat being sucked through it or to have your head exposed to the elements for 5 minutes? I have watched a couple of hats get sucked through engines over the years so I know it is a real hazard even if it isn't very frequent.
It's not the completeness of your uniform that keeps you out of trouble on the ramp but the visibility of the airport's SIDA badge or your company's employee badge on your outer garments that does. ;) |

Maybe it's true... But the idea makes me laugh a little. |
My hat is too small with my hair needing a haircut and too large after a haircut. and I've tried the next size up and that is too large anyway.
|
I've watched pieces of paper get sucked up occasionally too. I've always been amazed that the ramp crews don't do FOD sweeps at the beginning of shift or in between pushes. Just amazing.
The hats will cause engine damage compared with a piece of paper. |
I was raised to take my hat off when indoors. My airline wants me wearing the hat indoors and removing it for preflights on gusty ramps.
Just one more reason why being furloughed ain't that bad. |
