Skywest pilots and uniform policy
Do you have to wear the hat? At all? I ask b/c at ASA they are cracking down on the uniform policy, which includes the hat when the jacket is to be worn (Nov-Feb or Mar, I think). And I've heard rumors that you don't have to have it as part of your uniform.
|
When I was there, the hat was only required if you wore the trench coat.
|
Must be a DAL thing coming down on people. Lets just say at Chautauqua I wore my hat the other day for the first time in over 2 years.
|
I think it is DL... we've been told at Mesaba that DL is watching and that the company will take a "hostage" should it be necessary.
|
I'm a fo at skyw and I don't own a hat, hope that answers your question.
I have been thinking about getting one and letting the hair grow but you get laughed out of the crew room in slc for wearing a hat, and as I am an FO I CRAVE acceptance among my peers. |

It's been mentioned in RGS and by the union. They company shouldn't have to warn us... we should be wearing the uniform properly to begin with.

http://www.costumesupercenter.com/cs...x600/28339.jpg Honestly I think the hat, especially for the reginal pilots that wear the generic uniform factory ones, does more damage to our image around the terminal than does good. |
Three years ago, I say a Southwest pilot and a Skywest pilot with hat on. I thought to myself, the Southwest FO just got hired and the Skywest Captain probably just upgraded. It's a rare sight to see a Skywest or Southwest guy in a hat. For the longest time I didn't even know that Southwest had hats
|
Huh. I've never seen a southwest guy in a hat. I didn't know they had them. I'd wear the hat if we could wear shorts and lose the tie.
|
Ditto the DCI thing at Comair.
The CP office came out with a memo a couple weeks ago that asks us to watch our uniform compliance, and buy a new hat if we have "misplaced" our old one. They include a caution that the company will begin enforcing the uniform code. So I guess all Cincy Captains and JFK Captains/FOs had better read up on crew policies/procedures before DCI forces our CPs to drop the hammer on us. |

If the company that writes your check, thus supporting the roof over your head and putting food in your belly, says the company policy is to wear pink bunny slippers - you wear freakin pink bunny slippers!
It never ceases to amaze me that pilots are the only group that choose to think it is OK to ignore the policy of the company that they work for. If you get hired at a company and they say you wear tan pants and a blue button down to work, that is what you wear. You don't show up wearing a red golf shirt because you don't like blue button downs. I have had a lot of differnt kind of jobs, and I wore what they told me too. Why is this different? Cause the hats don't look cool or they mess up your hair? Maybe A Rod should show up at third base without his hat! Or, why stop at the hat. Black dress shoes are uncomfortable, so wear some Nike sneakers. Shorts and flip flops are pretty comfortable. Why not wear those? |

Southwest has a hat?
A-rod wears a hat because there's a ball flying at him going 90 mph. Which has me wondering - what is the purpose/history of our uniform hat? Finally-the original thread - so Skywest does have a hat with their uniform and needs to be worn with your overcoat per your ops manual - thanks! |
From the SKW Ops Manual:
"The uniform hat is only mandatory when the trench coat is worn. A smug, haughty, and self-satisfied facial expression is mandatory at all times. Eye contact with pilots of other airlines is never allowed." Just kidding. ;) |
Actually, the hat isn't required with the trench coat anymore.
There had been a push earlier this spring to bring the hat back 100% of the time, but it hasn't happened yet. Somebody in accounting probabaly figured buying 2800 hats would cost to much and told flight ops no. |
I know I'll get flamed for this one but....
I always wear a hat in uniform. I think it looks professional and to me the uniform just seems incomplete without it. My airline has a policy of "hats on at all times in view of the flying public". But even before when they were optional, I wear one. Mabye its because I got used to it in the military, but honestly " why do some guys not like the hats? They shade your face on sunny days on the tarmac, and its not like they are uncomfortable, and your headset is what messes up your hair, and I would argue if the hat or headset messes up your hair its too long anyway....:p. Seriously why is it some guys dont like them? |
I do not believe the members of AC/DC endorse the message posted next to their album cover.
Just sayin'.... |

No hat is required at SkyWest*
*If you choose to wear a uniform piece that lessens the conspicuousness of your position as a crewmember (IE a trench coat or black sweater, sweater vest, cardigan that doesn't have epaulets or wings on it) you have to wear the hat. I think the idea behind it is so that when you're on the ramp, airport personnel don't get worried that some dude in a mustache and a black trench coat is tampering with an airplane. |
Wheel hats worn on the ramp are a FOD hazard. Unless they are secure on the head, which a wheel hat isn't, they should be left in the cockpit. Which is cheaper, an engine replacement from a hat being sucked through it or to have your head exposed to the elements for 5 minutes? I have watched a couple of hats get sucked through engines over the years so I know it is a real hazard even if it isn't very frequent.
It's not the completeness of your uniform that keeps you out of trouble on the ramp but the visibility of the airport's SIDA badge or your company's employee badge on your outer garments that does. ;) |

Maybe it's true... But the idea makes me laugh a little. |
My hat is too small with my hair needing a haircut and too large after a haircut. and I've tried the next size up and that is too large anyway.
|
I've watched pieces of paper get sucked up occasionally too. I've always been amazed that the ramp crews don't do FOD sweeps at the beginning of shift or in between pushes. Just amazing.
The hats will cause engine damage compared with a piece of paper. |
I was raised to take my hat off when indoors. My airline wants me wearing the hat indoors and removing it for preflights on gusty ramps.
Just one more reason why being furloughed ain't that bad. |

Ok OK guys, you all got me...LOL just a slang term I still use today, guess thats why the rampers all think I'm wierd, I still call them "Tarmac-ers"...:p Geez, it takes a couple airline pilots....LMAO:D |
Pilot hat??? Oh yeah... I remember that useless piece of an addendum to the uniform until hotels removed ashtrays from the room. Now I have a place to put my change, keys, ID, and other items so they will not scatter about. I know… I know… the hat makes one look professional.
Well to those of you who believe in the philosophy… it’s better to look good than fly good, and you look marvelous… I’m sure you look marvelous. On the other side of the pond, don’t don the bloody things. And you what? We run a pretty safe operation over here without the damn things. |

Stop fretting about irrelevant crap like the uniform and worry more about your professional conduct in the cockpit. Iron your damn shirt and wear a clean one once in a while, also maybe lose the dockers and the "skinny ties" and chances are no one will give you any grief.
Good to know ASA is focusing on the important things like where to buy your uniform pants (bringing up congress' focus on professionalism--yes THIS is what congress was talking about...uniforms...) and completely ignoring the actual issues like reduced rest and fatigue. |
