West coast is not junior. OAK is the most junior on the west coast, but not what it used to be. Prepare to go to BWI or MCO, possibly MDW on your first vacancy bids. OAK after a month or two. LAS, PHX, and DEN after 3-6 months, but may be longer. It all depends on staffing needs and how many people ahead of you are lined up. Bottom line, prepare for a cross country commute, at least right after training. It has been pretty common lately to see entire new hire class go to BWI. The good thing is the hiring should continue, so there will be movement. Expect reserve to last for a while, especially on the west coast. Welcome!

I'll bet their first month of bidding that they'll be back in OaK. First month assigned by company has always been strange. I am the same seniority in OAK as I would be in BWI.

IOE base is assigned by the company. Hard-line month is awarded based on seniority.

Agree, movement in OAK is the fastest, yet not everyone can hold it right on the first bid. All who can't, go to BWI. Since BWI has such a huge turnaround (every month 40+ first time bidders who bid out of there the following month), it creates "false seniority" when every month 40+ FOs at the end of the list get the lines pushing everyone above them to the endless reserve. OAK is very different, not as many new bidders and mostly west-coasters waiting to move on to LAS, PHX, and DEN create a steady movement and a chance to get off reserve after 3-4 months.

But hey everyone has their preference.

FWIW, this is a completely different job if you live in a domicile.
Not only are your stress levels orders of magnitude lower, your paycheck will benefit as well.
I figure that commuting has cost me between $30-$70K per year for the last decade and a half+ due to much more limited opportunities to pick up vs. if I lived in domicile.
Just something to consider in the near future.
