I was a corporate guy. I was able to get free breakfast and an appetizer at the Hilton Arden West in SMF and a few others until my Hilton Gold ran out after a year.
STL will give points. Some give stay credits, but other than that, your status will decline.
Commuter hotels is the only way I’ve been able to gain good points—some pilots go for various Hilton Honors credit cards, or like the above post put a card down when they check in.
I was able to get two free nights worth of Sheraton points like the above room cleaning deal while in training.

Pro tip - Arden West gives lounge access to all crew keys. Other than that and a decent gym, the hotel is completely devoid of positive attributes.
The van driver will take you to in n out too. I tipped in cheeseburger last time I went.

Also, not to get too far off track, but yes, having a card that gets you hotel status or points is helpful. I use amex platinum. The annual fee hurts, but I extract over double the value of the fee every year. If you are still in the military the annual fee is waived.

That is the gist of the standard schedule. Having that over Christmas may change things up a bit and as always things can and do change at anytime.
