The company changed the staffing model in 2016. When I was hired, 10.5-11 pilots/plane was the norm and always had been. After the AirTran merger, this number moved up about 1 pilot/plane. The new norm is about 13 pilots/plane. Even after the Max returns, this won’t change. If it does trend back down, it’ll take 3-5 years. I’ll try to attach a chart put together by one of our guys.Attachment 4979

They didn’t change the staffing model because they felt like it. It needed to change because of stage length and the increased utilization.

It’s hard to squeeze a flight in if you’re bumping up against 117 if our average stage lengths are well over 2 hours.

Let’s not kid ourselves. The company WAY over staffed well before the MAX fiasco. The “new norm” was already hurting our pay opportunities even before the MAX got grounded, so while the return of that airframe will certainly help, the company seemed hell bent on changing the staffing model and not for the betterment of our W-2s.

Yup..... Those thinking that we're gonna go back to premium at will when the max comes back are gonna be sorely disappointed.

Premium? I checked ELITT last night. There are only two trips in it for the FO side in domicile. LOL premium. The 🦄 of five year FO life.

Average stage length hasn’t changed since 2015.

Rates of Pay

Averaging about 300 (9%)more flights/day. With over 2 hr legs it’s harder to stuff just 9% more pilots in. It needs to be a little more. Do you have the JA/unscheduled overnight info over the years?

Exact reason why rates of pay need to increase!

Been preaching it for decades. The vast majority of your co workers disagree, however.
